We all want to be happy, I suppose, each in our own way.  But, as we say, “Life” often gets in the way.  We don’t get the promotion, our relationship doesn’t work, our cars break down, it rains.  Sometimes our dog or cat dies, which is very sad. Sometimes worse things happen. Here is an idea that has perhaps never occurred to you: in order to be happy we sometimes have to be unhappy.  We have to LEARN how to be unhappy. Why would this be?  I will explain.  For the longest time, American psychologists in particular thought that to be happy you just needed to act ha ..read more

A very sad at Steve’s….
Steve’s PaleoNotes

It is with great sadness that I announce the closing of Steve’s PaleoGoods… I truly thought we could survive what appeared to be another rough patch, but with costs increasing by the day, the sad truth is I can no longer keep the doors open. Meat and food prices have gone through the roof, shipping costs have skyrocketed, labor costs are way up…the list goes on and on. While I hate to sound like a Debbie Downer, the last two years have been a death by a thousand cuts. The challenges have become so insurmountable that we simply could not find a clear path forward. It’s fair to say we had a very ..read more

My walks are probably the most valuable part of my day—the mental benefit is unmatched, and taking a walk has a way of helping me think through complex problems and come up with creative ideas. But sometimes I want a little more. So, I’ve taken up rucking, which is walking with a weighted backpack. I wanted to put together a quick Q&A about rucking, and you can decide whether you want to add some oomph to your walks and hikes. Let’s jump right in. Pic below: Getting ready to walk to a local park where our HQ is located. On the weekends, I like to hit the woods and walk up and down the ..read more

Ancestral Diet 101: What is It and The Science Behind Why it Works
Steve’s PaleoNotes

When it comes to finding the perfect diet for energy and longevity, researchers often look to the past. After all, diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and obesity are relatively new. And all of them are considered “lifestyle” diseases caused by the overconsumption of processed foods and a lack of physical movement that plagues the modern world. But what did our ancestors eat? And would their diets be considered healthy today? The fact is, there’s no evidence of just “one” ancestral diet in the history books. But one thing is certain: none of them looked like the Standard American Diet. And ..read more

Carbs and night waking?
Steve’s PaleoNotes

Some friends in our community were wondering about waking up in the middle of the night while dialing back their carbs, and wondering how to sleep through the night again. You can recover from an occasional night of fragmented sleep here or there, but when you consistently wake in the middle of the night and can’t fall back asleep easily, you’ll start to feel it during the day. When you first dial back your carbs, it takes some time for your body to get used to it. Before you settle into your new eating patterns, you may have some blood sugar fluctuations. You knew that was coming, though. Tha ..read more

Energy & Focus Part 2

Earlier this month I sent out a short essay on how to reclaim your focus in the attention economy (tech companies are literally selling your attention to the highest bidder). As a follow-up, here’s a simple, effective list of health and wellness tips you can use to support focus, rebuild dopamine function, and be more effective in life. Increase brain blood flow with short, intense bouts of exercise  Normally, as you use your brain, the areas that are most active get the most blood flow (which delivers oxygen and nutrients). But in people who have trouble focusing, the areas of the brai ..read more

We now live in an attention economy, meaning businesses literally pay to get eyeballs (views), thumbs (scrolling time), and mentions or placement for their product or services.  Here’s why that matters: When you spend time using technology unproductively, someone else profits People are making fortunes figuring out how to distract you successfully (good for them, not so good for you) Tech companies benefit from addiction to their products On the other hand, it also proves your attention is extremely valuable, not only to others, but also to you (and your family and community). Here’s ho ..read more
