Ready or not, here I come! “… eight, nine, ten. Ready or not, here I come!” My kids always delighted in the thrill of playing Hide and Seek. They welcomed the anticipation as well as the unexpected nature of the game, and it always concluded with giggles and hugs. The same cannot be said for the “hide and seek” and “ready or not” aspects of substance use disorder, and yet these are very present throughout each twist and turn of addiction. It’s been nearly a year since I’ve blogged or added content to the site. While it’s never been far from my mind, I simply got out of the habit and it’s time to start it back up. We’ve heard it before. Substance Use Disorder runs in families. For our family this was particularly concerning as our youngest headed to college last year. While I didn’t have reason to believe it was going to be a problem, his sister’s and brother’s college experiences weighed on my mind. I kept reminding myself that our youngest kid had walked a different path in high school, that he was well aware of the danger and consequences of substance use, that he was a different person and that he would walk his own path.
