Sea Stories is an annual convocation of those who share a bond with the world’s oceans, convened at The Explorers Club (TEC) in Manhattan. As you are reading this article, in many areas around the world there is snow on the ground and the water is pretty cool or even downright cold. Cold water diving can and does take place all year round.
How a diver defines cold water is highly subjective. Some consider anything under 80 degrees F/27 C to be cool water. Make no mistake, it is possible to get hypothermic in these temps. Others see 54 F/ 12 C (common in the Pacific off California) as cold. Incident data has shown that overweighting is one of the most common causes of diving accidents among new and experienced divers alike. An extra pound or two here and there may not send you to the bottom unexpectedly, but habitual overweighting is quite common, and many divers are unaware of how to properly check their weighting.
