No more Imperial in the names.

We have decided to drop the word Imperial from our tea names. Although, the term is meant to suggest superior quality it has not sat well with me, as the founder of the company. Being born and lived half my life in India, a country that was colonized for nearly 200 years, the term Imperial unfortunately has a seriously negative connotation. Admittedly, the realization has been a bit slow in coming.  The two teas whose names have changed are Himalayan Imperial Black and Earl Grey Imperial. The new names are Himalayan Black and Earl Grey Supreme. Rest assured the tea is the same; there has ..read more

Visit to Okayti Tea Estate in Darjeeling
Happy Earth Tea Blog

A winding road ribboning through the rain and mist of monsoons delivered us to Okayti tea estate, one of our newest partners from Darjeeling hills. Located in the picturesque Mirik Valley area, the tea estate is spread over 1600 acres with elevation ranging from 4000-6200 ft.  It felt like we were entering a massive magical garden. The clouds hung low and shrouded the tops of the green hills that were carpeted by tea bushes and forests. The air smelled green and sweet! Workers wearing bright rain gear were scattered in clumps on the hills as they picked the tea leaves. The houses of work ..read more

Happy Earth Tea Blog
by Niraj Lama

Bring out your finest china for its that time of the year again - the fabulous spring teas or "first flush" have begun to arrive! Couple of green teas from the mountains of China are already here and teas from India, Nepal and Taiwan will follow shortly. Spring teas are considered special because they are harvested during the first flush of new growth in the tea plant, typically in the months of March, April, and May. The new growth, or "first flush," of the tea plant produces leaves that are tender, delicate, and high in essential oils and other compounds that contribute to their unique fla ..read more

Resilience marks Sri Lankan tea

The evening traffic of Colombo constantly morphed the light on Chamikara Pilapitiya's face as he spoke to me from the passenger seat of his car while driving home. We were on a video call. He had recently sent us a fresh and delicious batch of black tea from his family tea factory, New Vithanakande. I wanted to catch up and find out how things were for him and his family right now in Sri Lanka. Last year the economy of this beautiful island nation imploded. Citizens struggled to buy food, fuel, and medicine due to shortages and inflation that raged around 90%. There were months-long protests ..read more

Happy Earth Tea Blog

As the season changes and the weather begins to get cooler, we turn to hot tea to warm the body and soul. We also begin to spend more time indoors, so now is the time to bolster our immune systems. Viruses live longer in colder temperatures and lower humidity, so we tend to get sicker during winter. There is one herbal tea we highly recommend that will help your body fight those nasty germs that make us miserable.  Holy Ginger, a mighty combination of Holy Basil (tulsi), and ginger. Tulsi is native to India and has been used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. It is ..read more

When the creative brewers at Abandon Brewing Company based in Penn Yan, NY reached out to collaborate we were honored and excited. “Abandon Brewing is committed to sourcing local fruit for our sour beers, but when out of season we decided to try a tea sour. With that in mind, we wanted to work with a local company and found Happy Earth Tea,” said A.J. Noto owner of Abandon Brewing Company. The idea of infusing tea in beer was daring and fun! So began the experimentation process of determining which was the right tea and they ultimately landed on Darjeeling Breakfast Tea for this beer venture ..read more

There has been growing interest to learn more about Oolong tea and so I wanted to tell you about three lovely winter oolongs from Taiwan we're offering this year. As a tea enthusiast you might wonder what these winter oolongs are all about, their characters and what makes them special? The winter oolongs we have are all lightly oxidized teas, which means they have delicate floral character. Remember, oolongs are teas whose leaves are oxidized anywhere from 12% to 80%. (Black tea is 100% oxidized, while while green tea has 0% oxidation.) Because of this the spectrum of flavors in oolongs are m ..read more

In an article about tea, in its April 2022 issue, one of the premier food magazines in the country Bon Appétit recommended for their readers a total of six tea purveyors. Guess who was one among that tiny list?! Why your favorite tea shop, Happy Earth Tea! Many people have wondered how we came to be on that list. Did Bon Appétit call? Did they visit? Meditations on Moonlight
Happy Earth Tea Blog
by Kyle Trenshaw

Our staff, Kyle Trenshaw is back with another blog post on our newest batch of Wuliangshan Moonlight, a white tea cake. Fun, educative and honest - always a pleasure to read Kyle's writing. Enjoy!  I spent a Sunday afternoon sharing tea with the usual suspects. On the menu was a gongfu of Happy Earth Tea's Wuliangshan Moonlight organic white tea. As we settled into our seats and I got the water boiling, I was really struck by the lovely coloration of the tea leaves and buds. Most tea cakes are quite dark brown from the aging process, but the Moonlight has strands of creamy white from the ..read more
