Cycling trip: a vintage wardrobe challenge?

I sometimes get asked whether I can do everything in my vintage clothes. The answer is yes, technically I can, and usually I do. But I do take care what I wear for which occassion, just as you'd do with modern clothes and as they did even more so back in the day. When I was going on a cycling trip through the Netherlands with one of my best friends I had to pack practical clothes, that's always a challenge for me.... I thought it'd be nice to share my packing choices and looks with you (and a little bit of the sights we saw) The trip would take three days of cycling 45-70 km a day. Now I cy ..read more

Inspiration: 1930's Fashion Magazines with Dreams and Color Schemes

As I wrote in my last post I was concerned about this blog being no more than a collection of outfits I wore, nice events I attended and of it becoming a mere repetition of my Instagram account. So instead I'm giving an insight into some of the things that inspire me when I put looks together. Old fashion magazines have always been one of my biggest inspirations. Digitization has taken such a flight over the years meaning many things have become available online and eventhough I do prefer to leaf through an actual magazine I will take two online sources as an example in this blog. Both are F ..read more

I wrote in my last post I had my birthday comming up. I celebrated it last Sunday and on the day itself. In this post: my outfits and the lovely presents I received :) On Sunday (the day before my actual birthday) Noortje and I went out for some vintage shopping. We didn't actually plan what we were going to do only the outfits we really wanted to wear. We had wanted to wear our tiltiest hats together for some time.  Lunch break, gives you a better view of our crazy hats and also that we do not always look as arrogant as we do in the picture above, actually we smile/giggle a lot ..read more

You know they say when it's September it'll be Christmas before you know it and the year is nearly over. And well since my last blogpost it has been 'snap' and somehow it turned into January. Here's a quick update with some outfit highlights from the last months. Above is one last bit of September. My friend Noortje and I own very similar lace and crêpe dresses and we thought it'd be fun to wear them at the same time. It was the beginning of an Autumn filled with matching outfits as you will see in this blog.  October On a very warm day in October we went out without coats it was ..read more

Summer dreams and autumn realities

It's the first day of autumn, summer is over, and I'm having a harder time getting to terms with that than usual. Normally I can't wait for autumn, but this year I keep on dreaming of summer comming back. So for now a little throwback with some dreamy summer pictures. And after that a look forward into the season ahead. Firstly: pictures taken at a nostalgic holiday about a month ago. I'm not showing all outfits only the ones I have a good picture of. I love the difference between floor-lenth eveningwear and shorter daywear that only really started in the 1930's. An evening dress w ..read more

Me-made summer wardrobe: Sewing projects

I've been doing some sewing lately and I thought it would be nice to share my projects. Though not actually vintage, everything was made from old patterns using vintage fabrics. I'm no expert seamstress, I never really learned how to sew but at about 16 when I wanted a victorian dress I found out I could do it without too much trouble. I had made Barbie clothes as a child and dressed miniature dolls in historical fashions so I had a basic understanding of patterns. When I started with vintage and did not have that many clothes I made some things for myself but as my collection grew I found ..read more

I've been wanting to do a post for a while but somehow never got round to it. So now I have a lot of catching up to do. As a consequence this post is quite long, has lots of pics and no real theme. Tweedride Breda In the end of May there was a Tweedride in Breda. I had the most perfect little tweed suit to wear but alas it was hot (like last year) so I went for a more tropic proof outfit. Last year I persisted, wearing a wool sweater and hat and it wasn't comfy. This year's fluttery summer dress and boater were much better. I almost did not buy this 1940's dress because it looks a bit rep ..read more

Modemuze collaboration: Vintage style

In this last blog in the series I'm writing for Modemuze (find the Dutch version here) I'll go into creating a vintage look with the help of styling guides from the past. Women knew exactly what should be worn with what and when, all these rules seem quite unattainable to us. Still it is interesting to look at old guidebooks and styling advice, albeit more for inspiration and enjoyment than to strictly follow up on. The style of the past Colorful ensembles from Vogue Paris, 1938 Most people wear vintage pieces as part of a modern outfit but some choose to go for a look that e ..read more

Modemuze collaboration: How to care for your vintage

In this second blog I'm writing for Modemuze (you can find the Dutch version here) I'll go into how to keep your vintage treasures in good shape and get maximum wear out of them. Of key importance is to be aware of their age and handle them conciously of that. Tips for caring for your clothes from a women's magazine, ca. 1940-45, mending thin spots before they become holes. Wearing vintage Where museum pieces may never be worn vintage is something that can be used on a daily basis. Wearing vintage however requires a different mindset towards garments as when you are wearing modern pieces ..read more

Three dresses with typical silhouettes from the 30's, 40's and 50's For the Dutch fashion platform Modemuze I'm writing a series of three blogs on vintage that will be published in Dutch on their website and in English here. These blogs explore the themes I've addressed in a reading for the programme that coincides with their exhibition at the OBA (public library of Amsterdam). This first blog will deal with buying and recognising true vintage pieces from the 20's to 60's For more information about Modemuze and the Dutch version of this blog: modemuze.nl Buying vintage: One of the que ..read more
