Hey all, my name is Zach; I’m a freelance photographer based out of Florida and I’m currently working on an independent piece surrounding a fraudulent influencer and her incredibly prolific social media presence. I’m reaching out to you all because I want to ensure that even while working as an independent writer my work still adheres to professional standards and guidelines. I took journalism throughout all four years of high-school, took a few more classes in college, and have a bit of industry experience working along side print journalists as a photographer, and occasionally helping to in ..read more

Depressed about throwing in the towel before I even got started

About 6 years ago, I graduated from my bachelors in journalism. I even won a couple of student journalism awards for a crime story which I covered, and then was accepted into my masters for broadcast journalism, at one of the best schools in the world. I was surrounded by a lot of people who I thought were better than me (finance, intelligence, status). I quickly developed a chip on my shoulder and became really disillusioned with journalism. I basically talked myself out of the whole thing, and told myself that I would never be hired to do long-form journalism on human rights issues and war ..read more

I ask since I am about to graduate with a journalism degree and want to start an account or two to keep track of politics in my area. Mostly I am also doing some writing on Substack on the side to try and work on my writing skills. submitted by /u/Aristotlegonerogue [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Since journalistic outlets compete against each other, and are financially dependent on audience capture in a capitalist market, do you think they want Trump and more wars?

When Trump was president, a lot of people spoke about how the New York Times absolutely loved him because their audience was so much more engaged, therefore providing the paper with an expanded readership, and were able to charge a higher price for their advertising. Having worked as a journalist (I left), I understand how much money actually plays into the decisions at newspapers and cable outlets etc., but I was never included in any of those financial decisions. But it would make sense, considering they are in the free market, that board members, CEOs, sponsors and donors would want a retu ..read more

Do journalists ever think for themselves?
Journalism | Reddit

Or do they just follow the herd. 100% of articles on Trump’s trial describe it as a “hush money” case. Aside from all using the same term, that’s not even what the case is about. It’s falsifying business records. At least you all didn’t give it a clever-only-to-you something-gate name for the 5000th time. I wonder what reporters called scandals before Watergate. submitted by /u/Timonacci [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Journalism terminology question

Hi folks, I'm helping someone draft an op-ed for submission to a Canadian newspaper. I am very clear on the difference between opinion and news. I've always understood the word article to refer to a news/fact-based piece/brief/story, and that an op-ed is not really an article but rather an opinion piece. Is it accurate in journalism-industry lingo to refer to an opinion piece as an article? submitted by /u/Bikin4Balance [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Rediscovering Journalism: Video or Text?

Hi there, my name is Pim and i could use some advice. I originally pursued a degree in Journalism, but due to various reasons, I shifted my career to Human Resources. However, my passion for highlighting underrepresented stories and overlooked issues has remained strong. Recently, I've found myself with more free time, previously spent streaming or relaxing, and I've decided to revisit my interest in storytelling. Now, I'm seeking your advice on how to proceed. I'm torn between creating videos or amateur documentaries and writing a blog. Video production is something I have experience in and ..read more
