I know there will be some outliers depending on location, but how many vacation days do you get a year, and how fast does that usually accrue? Looking at mine and wondering why it’s so low almost 5 months into the year lol submitted by /u/thatcrazylarry [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

HARO is back (sort of)

HARO (Help A Reporter Out) was a great resource for matching reporters with sources. It was so successful that Vocus (now Cision) bought it from Peter Shankman. Now Cision has killed it and Peter is resurrecting the service. It is free and now called Help Every Reporter Out or HERO. You can sign up as a source and get an email (up to 3X a day) with pitches. Or if you are a journo working on a story, fill out a form explaining what you are looking for and let the magic happen. I know Peter and his list and network is VERY strong and solid. https://helpeveryreporter.com submitted by /u/jfr ..read more

Hello! I've been following this sub for a while, but this is my first time posting here. I am moving to Ann Arbor from Nebraska this Fall for my girlfriend's grad school, and have a current remote job doing science communication at the university here. I could probably end up keeping that position, however, I am hoping to get back into enterprise writing and reporting. I graduated last year with my journalism degree and have written for several outlets including small town, TV, and student news and have a specific love for enterprise stories focusing on science or conservation. I would be wil ..read more

Does it matter what day/time you send an email for an interview request?

Just a minor etiquette question. I was about to send a few emails asking for interviews and schedule the emails to be sent tomorrow morning. I send them at night because it’s when I get time, but I usually have them scheduled for the following morning because reaching out during office hours feels more polite, but it seems like an unnecessary delay. I know in theory most people I am reaching out to work a 9-5, but it seems like many people are in the same boat as me and don’t get to emails until evening. It’s not really a big deal either way, and of course I am not expecting them to drop ever ..read more

What’s the best way to build relationships/sources within journalism

Hi Redditors, I was wondering what the best way to build relationships/sources within journalism is? I have written for three different websites in the last year but everything I have written has been opinion pieces based on research or second hand breaking news. I know it takes time to build sources but I don’t even know how/where to start. Any advice would be appreciated. submitted by /u/Iplaysportsgames [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Student journalist -- covering an event
Journalism | Reddit

Hi there! I'm a student journalist and tomorrow I'll be freelancing for a news station to cover an event. I have never covered an event and am looking for some tips on what to do while I'm there. I know the background of the event and the names of the speakers. I'm confident in myself as a journalist, but I guess I'm more-so nervous that I'll miss something that I need and be unable to get it afterwards. Any advice/pointers for covering events is very appreciated :-) the event is an unveiling of a new historical marker, if that helps. submitted by /u/the_big_steppa [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
