My heart swells with pride and excitement for the future of journalism as I highlight the incredible achievements of the SPJ William Paterson University student chapter. Recently earning the prestigious title of SPJ Campus Chapter of the Year for the second time in three years, its members’ dedication, passion, and commitment to journalistic excellence embody the spirit of SPJ and serve as a shining example for student chapters across the nation. When WPSPJ faculty advisor Nick Hirshon started working at William Paterson University in 2016, he envisioned how to reinvigorate the journalism prog ..read more

After years of effort by press freedom advocates and their allies, Congress in its current session seems to be on the verge of finally passing a federal reporter shield law, which would give broad protection to journalists from being compelled to reveal the names of sources and methods in federal court testimony. In mid-January, the House of Representatives passed without objection, the “Protect Reporters from Exploitative State Spying Act” or PRESS Act. The bill, which as of this writing was currently pending in the Senate, seeks “to maintain the free flow of information to the public by esta ..read more

Was content a factor in Gannett axing “Doonesbury”?
Quill Magazine
by Lou Harry

Fans of “Doonesbury” who’ve been getting the edgy comic strip in a Gannett-owned newspaper searched in vain for it Sunday. That day’s strip mocked the notion that something other than slavery was the primary cause of the Civil War and featured a teacher telling students that many Southerners assisted the Union Army. No Gannett newspaper carried the strip. Bob Krause, who runs an organization that supports homeless and war-injured veterans and served briefly in the Carter administration, posted the strip on X (formerly Twitter) and noted its absence in papers owned by Gannett, the nation’s larg ..read more

Assistant Professor Chalise Macklin makes sure guests who speak to her broadcast classes at the University of Memphis include people of color, women and members of the LGBTQ+  community. And her lectures weave in examples that showcase a diverse range of people and communities. It’s a reminder to her students that many types of people will consume the news they produce when they start their journalism careers and that diversity should be reflected in their reporting. She also wants to send the message that people just like them, regardless of race, gender identity, social class or other a ..read more

Since 1985, Reporters Without Borders has defended press freedom, pluralism and independence the world over. Approximately half the global population has no or limited access to free, uncensored, reliable news and information means that its work to track and publicize issues of press freedom infringement is happening around the clock. Quill spoke with Clayton Weimers, U.S. executive director of Reporters Without Borders, about the organization’s work and impact. The following has been edited for clarity and length. From 2002 to 2023, the U.S. dropped from the 17th position to 45th in World Pre ..read more

As anyone who’s read about 19th century U.S. journalism already knows, old-timey newspaper circulation wars between rival papers could get pretty ugly. Yet even in those two-fisted times, when battles over readership sometimes turned into literal battles, the century-long struggle between the Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News was something else. “I can’t imagine being in a competitive environment where I have to watch over my shoulder just to make sure I’m not clubbed or maybe shot by a competitor,” said Pittsburg State University professor Ken Ward.  (Photo courtesy of Ken Ward ..read more
