What does a day in your art practice look like?
I usually arrive in the studio around 9 and immediately settle in to emails, doomscrolling and some general tidying up while the encaustic warms up. By 10am I am up and at it. I use the studio as a home base for my day job as well. Doing so allows me to bounce
back and forth, with varying degrees of success, throughout the day.
What would life be like without art?
It’s almost unimaginable, isn’t it? I suppose my life without art would be dark. To the point that I’d almost rather not think about it. Seems to me that it would result in a pretty bl ..read more

Sending Smoke Signals
Artist’s Studio
The first step involves photographing everyday objects that will serve as the building blocks for the final artwork. These photographs of patterns and textures are then printed in large scale to act as either the background or the foreground collages in the final piece.
Next comes a full day dedicated to meticulously constructing “staged” images in the studio. This process is akin to sculpting, as the photographs are manipulated in a three-dimensional fashion. These sculptural still-life’s serve solely as the foundation for the final photograph and are nev ..read more

What does a day in your art practice look like?
On a day when all goes well, I start with coffee, meditation, sometimes sitting in my garden or gardening to further clear my mind and then I go into the studio. Once in the studio I might just look at what I’ve done the day before or I might start painting right away. Picking up the studio, putting things away, mixing paints are ways that I get ready to actually paint. I try to work in the studio 5-7 hours a day, 5-6 days a week.

What does a day in your art practice look like?
Many of my projects are road trip-based and in other states or countries. So up before dawn, shower and breakfast, then 10-12 hours driving/walking/shooting, then find a hotel, dinner, then upload, back up and edit for another couple of hours.
What is the hardest part of creating your art?
Getting it seen.

When Monica Marks texted me from Frieze, we had no idea her photos and experience would end up here, in Art and Cake. But once she mentioned how many photos she took, I jumped at the chance to share her experience.
Our text messages started at 11:44am and went something like this until 3:33pm.

Hi my art friends!!
Art and cake and Shoebox Arts has always had as its primary focus the idea to support artists however we can.
I would love to use our Instagram to share work by as many artists as we can. (I know, Instagram can be a bugger, with changing algorithms, but I am going to milk everything I can from it while it is here and still helping the art world)
I can use your help!!
When you go to an art event, any art event and take photos of OTHER a ..read more

What does a day in your art practice look like?
When not dealing with graphic design projects, I start my mornings working on the painting on my easel. Like clockwork, coffee brews, LoFi music plays, and I pick up where I left off the night before. If I’m between paintings or feeling uninspired, I hop on my bike and grab a camera. I scour for inspiration in my surroundings—architecture, urban animals, nature, random folks, and common objects. Photography is a source of influence over the work.
Sometimes, when working on an installation, I’ll spend the day searching eBay and meetin ..read more
