A few days ago my child went to a new instructor for classes, he takes classes at school but his teacher told us he's advancing at a much faster pace than any of his peers and while she can teach him she's play the Cello and thinks he will succeed with a Violin teacher. With that said , we went and new teacher let us know his bow and chin rest were way too small. She advised us that perhaps it may be better to purchase one, that there a decent ones around $300-400 if not to at least get a better bow, currently we are renting. We ended up going to the rental place and they checked and saw the ..read more

Does “Pickup” chamber music exist…?

I play a sport and have always been able to find “pickup” games of that sport in any city I moved to — games where you just show up and play and there is no long term commitment. Are there any websites or organizations that help organize “pickup” chamber music jams — basically, casual chamber music reading sessions? I used to play and love playing chamber music but have been away from playing for a bit and definitely do not have the time for a serious commitment. But I’m a good sight reader and I’d love to be able to find musicians near-ish to me of similar-ish playing ability to sight read a ..read more

How does Tonal Energy Choose its temperament center?

For example, if I’m tuning an excerpt in the key of A flat, TE dictates that A flat is 415.3 which makes my open g string slightly flat. I’m just wondering if anyone has any insight on why it chose 415.3 as its center and not something like 414. Could it be based on equal temperament when A is dictated as 440? submitted by /u/Subject_Position_400 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I played serenade for strings about a year ago, but after coming back to it for an audition I’m struggling to make it clean. Does anyone have any tips to make this passage clean? Or for spicatto in general? Spicatto has never came easy for me, even after 10 years of playing haha submitted by /u/i_am_soap- [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Shaking during performances

What do you all recommend for this? It is nerves. I don’t feel nervous but when I get up to perform, I shake. My doctor used to give me propranolol before job interviews because even my voice would shake. This is solo with accompaniment. In ensemble I don’t shake as badly. submitted by /u/miniwhoppers [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Opinion about a "Lyon" stamped bow

Hello, I post this to ask your opinion about a bow that I am trying. I like it but I have no idea where it comes from and I would like to know if someone knows what this "Lyon" stamp may stand for, to evaluate if it can be worth the price I am asked for. I have read the FAQ entries for violin evaluation and ID. The FAQ doesn't answer my question because neither the seller nor anyone else I asked to has been able to answer me. submitted by /u/Jimthafo [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hello there, I was practicing fast passages today and I'm usually not really tense during practice but well, guess not this time. Would you have any tips to relax your left hand while you play fast passages ? And after it was mostly my wrist and finger joints that hurt, so I would really appreciate if you have some advice to have a more relax hand while playing and after. Thanks ! submitted by /u/Soft_Trash9210 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
