Hi there! I’m not new to art teaching but I am heading to a new school next year! I have taught every grade from k-12. This will be a MS. One thing I have always struggled with is how best to keep student portfolios and how to get that work from a portfolio to my grade book then on display then back to the student? I know we all have different storage and rooms but art teachers are the most creative people on the planet and I’d love to hear what you’ve found to be your best practices! I’ve taught HS for the past 2 years and MS for a bit before that. My biggest struggle is getting those projec ..read more

AP Portfolio Comprehension

I’m just looking to see if any other AP Art teachers have had similar experiences with AP students. I’ve gone over the portfolio requirements almost every day since the Spring semester began. I’ve broken it down into sections and steps with deadlines and instructions for each one. I am requiring the portfolios to be completed by this Friday so we can spend next week refining and perfecting them. I still have students that are like “how many pictures do I need? What is this section? What two writing prompts? What AP college board portfolio?” I am brand new to AP and honestly, I hope I never ev ..read more

End-of-year ideas for a tricky group

So it's not my first year as a teacher, but it is my first year teaching a group like this. I teach at a private school for kids with learning disabilities, primarily dyslexia. My oldest group is a class of 6 boys, grades 7-8. They're good kids, but very difficult to plan for. I see them twice a week, for a total of 210 minutes - but it's very difficult to get them to spend more than 5 minutes on any one drawing/painting/sculpture/etc. before they announce they're "done!" We've spent a couple months each on visual art, music, drama, and dance (in progress now). The last unit in the year plan ..read more

I'm looking into teaching art as a career, but don't want my whole major surrounding art education within itself. How do I go about this?

I'm looking into art education (secondary) as a potential career, but I'm not sure if I want my college career focused solely on teaching art education as I'm more interested in other fields of art. I'm looking into stepping my toes in the water of art education but I'm not sure how to go about this, if this is even a possibility. Sorry, I'm in Michigan! submitted by /u/InspectionEcstatic82 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I’m applying to a job as an associate instructor at a private school for k-8 and was wondering if anyone had any advice for the application/interview process. They are looking for someone with an art degree with a desire to pursue art education which is consistent with my desire to receive an MFA and eventually teach at the college level. I have a couple years experience working with kids in summer camps and afterschool programs (mostly middle school kids), but not much formal teaching experience. I do have a lot of experience creating art through my own education and studio practice. I feel ..read more

End of year clay project

There are 5 weeks of school left, would you bother doing a clay project in this time frame? I really would like to do a clay project with the kids before the end of the year but I don't want to give myself a headache and the kids a heartache if this isn't enough time to finish something feasibly. Ideas for a project: Minimal pinch pots (making it into a flower / monster / animal) Cutting a circle / other shape out of a slab and decorating it with their initial along with some cool textures Something else very small that could be finished in one day submitted by /u/AWL_cow [visit reddit ..read more
