Parent's Obsession with Other People's Kids

At my school, there are so many parents concerned with other people's kids. What I mean by this is that parents hate being told about their kids bad behavior. They try to point out other people's children and their wrong doings and talk about how we "target" their children (all the while those other kid's parents saying the exact same thing as the other parent). I am not understanding this obsession with pointing at other kids and worrying about if they are being reprimanded. I was talking to my mom who is in her 50s and I'm in my late 20s. My sister is 10. I remember my mom saying to me and ..read more

Can someone please explain kindergarten graduation?

As a millennial, we only had graduation celebrations if we were leaving that school building. I think we had preschool, 8th grade, and of course HS. With kindergarten, the children are just going down the hall usually. Am I missing something? I understand it’s fun to have an end of year award assembly or celebration in any grade, but where did K graduation come from? Do a lot of schools actually do this? submitted by /u/Teacher_mermaid [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

What are the worst states to be a teacher?

I have seen a lot of posts about the best states to teach, but what states would you recommend a teacher avoid? I am about halfway to completing my degree in Elementary Education and I am trying to decide on where I should go once it's time to complete the student teaching requirement. I am originally from Georgia and live in Ohio, and I've been told that it's not a great place to be a teacher and I'd prefer to work in a state with a strong union presence. I have family in Georgia and Ohio, grew up between the two, but I'd prefer to move out west. I'd also prefer to live in a smaller city/tow ..read more

Entitled student

So the other day I had a student follow me into my office, and it’s a small, completely separate room from my classroom. I keep small snacks, beverages, and a coffee maker in there because I have double block classes and very limited time to eat/drink plus my students tend to come back to my class during lunch to eat. The student follows me in and demands I make him a cup of coffee as well (I don’t have cups I just use the coffee cup I took to work) so I asked if he would catch it in his hands? Nope. By demands I mean he says “make me a cup of coffee too” and I said “no” and he then says “ple ..read more

3rd Year teacher burn out... I can't do this anymore!

I didn't originally go to university to be a teacher. I'm trained in Heritage Conservation. But during COVID, all the museums closed, we had massive layoffs, in the thousands. So I retrained in an industry that had a desperate shortage - education. I had worked with kids before, in Museum Education. At first I really enjoyed it. But this past year has been awful. The admin at my school is so unsupportive... I've looked around at other schools and I feel like maybe it would be better at them. The problem is, we no longer have a teacher shortage, but a surplus, so for every job, there are about ..read more

Why jeans day?

Why is it always jeans day? Why not shorts day? Or (nothing offensive or vulgar) graphic t shirt day? Or hat day? The students get a day once a month where they can pay a dollar to wear a hat, I would love that. Heck, give me a hoodie day. They already refuse to enforce our dress code. submitted by /u/PuffPoof215 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Mom blames me for her scholar using AI for essay

Bit of a long one but hope yall enjoy this roller coaster as I did too. I am a Pre-AP English I Freshman Teacher at a pretty well established Public Charter School in Texas. Earier in the year, I was afraid of kids using AI to write their essays since the ELA Department decided to do Writing Wednesday last year 2022-2023 when AI wasn't as much of a threat. Now it's everywhere and I stumbled upon my first major use almost 100% of the essay was AI Generated. I let her go with a warning and lunch detention and that all her essays from here on out had to be handwritten. I called mom and let her k ..read more

This year has been a beast. Early on I felt as if I was being targeted. Progressively got worse to the point that I was being ignored when I would ask for help or suggestions and behavior incidents weren’t being addressed. I have been consulting with the union since the first quarter of the year. As recommended, wrote a letter of concerns to admin to address the issues. I never got a response. 6 weeks later, I’ve been recommended for termination for things that have never been formally addressed with me. Seems my personnel file has been stuffed with documentation that was never addressed with ..read more
