It’s almost the time to start the fall semester and academic year. It’s amazing we are here again, but that’s the nature of life – time moves fast when you are having fun and busy. As I am preparing to start my 12th year at the University of Louisville (amazing, I know!), I am reflecting on what was usually on my to-do list and plans for the upcoming year. I think there’s always something exciting about getting ready for the new academic year, preparing for the classes ahead, and thinking about what case studies, examples, and topics to cover. For those of us who are teaching social media, A L ..read more

Powered by Nostalgia x Personalization: Success of Super Mario Bros & Barbie Movies

In an industry where there is a lot of excitement and competition, there also is a lot of creativity in the entertainment and movie business. While movies and their stars are focused on generating the most from the box office, there is another competition in the works: the marketing battlefield. We have seen some great activations and campaigns for movies, but I think we should see what Super Mario Bros and Barbie both have done. SMB opened up this weekend and has SOARED to record box office heights for their movie, and Barbie will open later this summer. What do I like about the Super Mario B ..read more

You know you have been busy when you realize it’s been a while since you have written a blog post. That’s been me because I realized it’s been not only month, but several (!!) since I have written a blog post. OOPs. But that’s sometimes what happens in life! It’s been *that* busy for me for 2023. It’s been a good kind of busy – working on building up The Bird’s Nest, working with clients, mentoring students, meeting new contacts and establishing key relationships. That on top of teaching, researching, coordinating projects, and writing – and then there is my life outside of academia as well. I ..read more

Six months in directing TBN: Lessons and Takeaways

Happy 2023 and the start of another academic year! There is always a new feeling towards the start of a new year and even academic term. No grades have been set, publications for the year start from square one, and everything is fresh and ready to go. While working on prepping for my classes (including teaching social media for the 12th year AND tenth officially at UofL), and working on the second term as Director of The Bird’s Nest. I realized I had not done a recap of some of the lessons and takeaways from the first six months of my new position. Well, we got to remedy that! Reflections and ..read more

I am entering a new phase in my career. I’ve always been a big believer of career evolutions and phases. There are times in our career where we have the opportunity to jump forward, or take on a new role and opportunity. Not only that, I have always made it clear my goal and purpose has been to make an impact, whether it is with my students, the industry, or the social media field and profession. The first phase of creating an impact was my work in social media – building a foundation of how to research and teach social media principles across the board. Publications, talks, and sessions about ..read more

AEJMC 2022: Same conference, same issues still are present

This is a post that has taken me a while to write, for good reason. I was able to attend my first in person academic conference since COVID19. This was a conference and I have a very complicated relationship, and it has been this way for the past several years. This conference is AEJMC. To be perfectly honest, I have been very vocal about my views of AEJMC for quite some time. I had legitimate concerns about the conference before COVID, and even during the pandemic. The 2020 Conference in my opinion was a case study on what not to do (ex. purchasing a super and ineffective virtual conference ..read more

Cannes Lions is BACK!

I had my first international trip in three years, and it was so good to be back! What better way to take my first trip since COVID impacted the world than to Cannes Lions. As I have shared many times over the years, Cannes Lions has been one of my all-time favorite events to attend. While this may spark some reactions from my fellow colleagues in academia – it is important to say that the value you are able to get from Cannes Lions is beyond what any academic conference can offer to professors and students. Yep, I said it. Just waiting to see if the lightening bolts from the academic community ..read more

First In-Person Conference Takeaways from Integrate

I did something that I used to do pretty much all the time this time of the year. But, this was my very first one since February 2020. What am I talking about? I am talking about attending an in-person conference! I was able to spend the weekend in West Virginia at the Integrate conference, one that I have been going to pretty much every year since 2010 (!!!) It has taken over two years for me to be able to get to go to an in-person conference where it was not hybrid and no Zoom screens to be seen. I was able to take away some key lessons from the experience professionally, but also personally ..read more
