I’m very excited to share this wonderful drawing with you, created for ‘The Elves and the Shoemaker’ summer tour! It's drawn by the hugely talented Rositsa Vangelova, who’s based in Bulgaria. Like most of us, she’s been juggling home school and lockdown and working from home. We know just how challenging that can be, and we’re very grateful she was able to take on this commission for us. “This is one of my all time favourite classic fairy tales and I'm glad that I had a chance to work on it once again” We described the actors costumes to Rositsa so she could match the look of the Elves to the ..read more

The Show must go on! These are challenging times for theatre companies, and especially for our larger landmark venues which bring us all so much joy. I'm hoping they will be able to open their bars on 4th July so we can buy a drink and toast the arts - and showing our support at the same time. For Treehouse - a theatre without a theatre - in some ways its easier. We are small, flexible, responsive and adaptable. As a family business the full time members of Treehouse Theatre can continue to work together, planning, rehearsing, recording stories, fixing props and making costumes. Most of all, w ..read more

Wow, how the world has changed since March! Treehouse Theatre has been working hard since schools closed to investigate and explore ways in which we can adapt our performances so that both actors and audiences are as safe as possible. "We are passionate about Interactive Theatre. ,Blurring the boundaries between actors and audience to allow children to explore their creativity and practice performance skills in a safe environment, is the ethos at the heart of our work. We are determined to keep the audience at the centre of our performances and certainly not relegated to the role of passive ob ..read more

A socially-distanced performance for schools and venues - we have adapted our Pop-Up Story Theatre to be our main performance format this summer. Story-telling meets Interactive Theatre! Our Pop-Up Story Theatre invites members of the audience to be part of the action, so we can enjoy a great story together. Children can join in with the action, say lines, create the soundscape, and become interactive scenery, as we immerse ourselves in the fun of performing together, in a safe and carefully managed environment. (These photos are pre-Covid of course!) Early years and Key stage 1 The Gingerbr ..read more

Today was a very exciting day - we got to see the wonderful artwork created by children at St James Primary School in Bournemouth. Last week the children were asked to listen to some of the 'Tales from the Treehouse'. To get them started, we filmed a guided tour of our studio so they could see where the stories are recorded, and some of our secrets - like how we use the pantomime costumes to help deaden the sound in the space. The stories they listened to were 'Jack and the Beanstalk', 'Thor and Hrungnir', and 'The Magic Paintbrush'. The artwork they have created is just amazing! We are blown ..read more

Thor’s Duel with Hrungnir is a classic story from Norse Mythology in which Thor, Father of the Gods, takes on Hrungnir, the mightiest of the Giants. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozTaPWGWx1Q Told by Ben Lindsey-Clark, Tales from the Treehouse invite you to be swept away by your own imagination! Stories that we listen to (rather than watch) are immersive and engaging. The listeners' imagination is free to draw its own imagery and create its own world, inspiring future interaction with the story and its characters. Since we're working from home for a while - quite a challenge for a theatre com ..read more

Tales from the Treehouse - Episode 19 – The Ship-Wrecked Sailor
Treehouse Theatre

This is one of the oldest written stories in the world. It was found written in Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs on a piece of 4000 year old parchment in the Museum of St Petersburg in Russia. Where it came from originally remains a mystery. The story is about a man trying to share a story of hope with someone who is seeing things in a negative way. Whether he is persuaded to change his mind, you will have to find out by listening for yourself... ‘The Ship-Wrecked Sailor’ also explores the way in which a person can be transported to a strange and bewildering place, only to return home again. This ..read more
