Happy Friday! Happy spring!   Although I’m not packing away my winter clothes, I’m feeling more optimistic about the possibility of spring. Word of the Day Practice Session. At Thursday’s Word of the Day Practice, we created a Word of the Day cluster around the word “spring.” For two minutes, we free-associated around the central word, then shared the results. One writer connected to a phrase from the poem “April is the cruelest month” from T.S. Eliot’s immortal poem, The Wasteland. This association led her back to a memory of going on a field trip and having a cr ..read more

March 4, 2023 PANO Network Seminar I will be holding my first Word of the Day seminar for the PANO network on Wednesday, March 8 at 1:00 pm EST. I’m excited to share how to use the Practice as a daily tool to create a firm foundation for greater self-acceptance. This allows for greater creativity and better time management. If you are interested in attending, you can register here.  Self-Acceptance Self-acceptance is the number one element that we need to add to our creative toolbox. The mistake people make is to assume that self-acceptance is a state of being. Self-a ..read more

Happy Friday!   Valentine’s Day is past, hooray! When I went for a lesson at my studio yesterday, a happy couple came in to work on their wedding dance. My instructor asked them, “So, how was your Valentine’s Day?” The future bride replied, “Uneventful,” and breathed an audible sigh of relief. “I guess I got it right,” the future groom agreed. And the lesson began. But what if he hadn’t? What if the future groom had failed “to get it right?” Would whatever went wrong have then created a permanent rift in their relationship? This is a useful question to ponder if you’re looking to create ..read more

Happy Friday! I’m excited to share some recent insights about how to succeed, or succeed better! Why Writers Succeed For 25 years, I have helped writers succeed. My students have won awards, been published by the major houses, and been produced in both TV and film. Over the years, I have asked myself why some have succeeded, and some have failed. Recently, I found the answer, and this understanding is part of what motivates me to seek to gain wide exposure for the Word of the Day practice. I finally figured it out: While I offer a structure, deadlines, and a trademarked writing meth ..read more

It’s been an exciting week, but very stressful for many people. One of my friends said, “Wow, this whole week felt like one long Monday.” So on Wednesday, I decided that the Word of the Day webinar should be fun. We began by answering the question, “What color is success for you?” Next, I asked the class to imagine an object that would represent success. Students chose a Ferrari, a vase of flowers, a movie premiere, or a TV series contract. Then I explained that this object represented an award they would give themselves for an accomplishment. “What will we be getti ..read more

Word of the Day Club The daily meetings have been fantastic! I’m finding that having the accountability of showing up each day and doing serious creative work has changed the way I feel about myself. It’s not that I don’t feel good about myself. It’s not that I don’t trust myself. It’s not any of those things. It’s simply that the connection with the other writers inspires me to do better. There’s something about the collegial comfort of sharing a zoom screen and doing an exercise that helps each of us individually. Yet, we’re doing it together, and that is powerful! Happy Friday!   The Word of the Day webinar this week was really fun. I shared the three-part Story Creation Exercise. It involves creating three successive WOTD clusters with specific prompts. The first part was to create a cluster around the phrase, “I remember a time when…” while recalling big or small events that had occurred in your life. Next, we took a look at the five to eleven events that attendees generated in the two-minute brainstorming period. Then we created a second WOTD cluster answering the question: “What was the lesson I learned from this time?” The ..read more

Happy Friday! Happy New Year! The year started off with a bang for me because the Word of the Day Club began on Monday. During the half-hour meeting, we completed a powerful exercise in which we stated our goals for the year. Then using the Word of the Day Practice, we each found a new pathway to improving our writing and writing schedule. To begin the Practice, we did a basic opening stretch, inhaling, lifting our arms above our heads and spreading our fingers, imagining that we were gathering beautiful gold energy, then brought our arms down slowly to create resista ..read more
