By: Emily Meeks  Locking the door at bedtime has been a nighttime practice since I can remember. When I was younger, it was the last thing that my father would do before coming upstairs – sliding the chain and turning the key to the deadbolt. I perceived that nothing could get in and nothing could be taken away.  During the height of the COVID lockdown, when church, yoga and restaurants were all closed, I traded urban Seattle  living for the slower pace of an island off the Puget Sound. My virtual world expanded with ocean tides, herons’ nests, and forest passages. I began to no ..read more

Now in Joppa there was a disciple whose name was Tabitha, which in Greek is Dorcas. She was devoted to good works and acts of charity. At that time she became ill and died.  When they had washed her, they laid her in a room upstairs. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, who heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him with the request, ‘Please come to us without delay.’ So Peter got up and went with them; and when he arrived, they took him to the room upstairs.  All the widows stood beside him, weeping and showing tunics and other clothing that Dorcas had ..read more

The Rt. Rev. Susan Goff has announced “This afternoon the Standing Committee of the Diocese of Virginia announced the decision of a majority of its members not to add any petition candidates to the slate for the election of the 14th Bishop Diocesan.” The last diocesan bishop, the Rt. Rev. Shannon Johnston, announced his resignation in November 2018. Goff, bishop suffragan, has served as the ecclesiastical authority of the diocesan since that time. The nominations committee in March announced a slate of four white men. On April 4th, Bishop Goff addressed concerns about the slate. Her announceme ..read more

“Then came there unto him all his brethren,…and they bemoaned him, and comforted him…every [one] also gave him…an earring…”     Job 42:11 KJV She was dressed neatly in clean but inexpensive clothing of muted beige and white —  straight skirt, cotton blouse and a sweater vest. The woman’s thinning hair was short but fluffed and manicured in place. Her round face, rather like Mrs. Claus or an aging cherub, displayed a serene, inviting smile. I don’t remember whether she wore jewelry. I encountered her in a convenience store, while buying a coffee drink to push me through the ..read more

The 23rd Psalm The Holy One is my Shepherd;    there is nothing else I need or lack. In verdant fields God urges my rest,    by clear, sweet waters God leads me. You refresh and revive my soul,    and are my guide to holy pathways    that I may glorify Your NAME in each step. Even if evil and death overshadow me    and the walls of the deepest valley tower over me, no fear of evil shall overtake me;    for You are my companion alongside me always;    Your rod and staff are ever between me and danger,       and ..read more

Good Sheep?

Unlike most Christians, I find the standard image of Jesus as Good Shepherd annoying at the least, and absurd at the best.  Years ago, I served an historic parish on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, St. Paul’s Chestertown, whose building has been used for worship continuously from 1713 to the present, longer than any other building in Maryland. Almost every accoutrement in the church is “new.” The slave balcony is a late addition, as are what appear to be ancient box-pews. A wrought iron electric chandelier provides dim light augmenting the natural light offered by large colonial windows, and hy ..read more

In his address to the United Methodist Church House of Bishops, incoming President, Bishop Thomas J. Bickerton  acknowledged the de facto schism of that church resulting from the launch of the Global Methodist Church on Sunday May 1st. In his address, Bishop Bickerton called on the United Methodists to commit to “spending most of our time positioning our church for the next chapter of our life together: talking about the movement of the spirit in our midst, the exciting days that lie ahead, and the joy we will have being able to live out our calling to preach the Good News of God’s love r ..read more
