Admittedly, I'm behind with my retirement planning, but I'm hoping I can still make positive changes to retire somewhat comfortably. I've been working with a financial advisor for the last few years, but I always tend to think he's not maximizing my money for retirement, so perhaps we need to part ways, tell me if I'm wrong. I'm 38 and married (37F). I work in a government job and can retire in February of 2031 with a pension of roughly $130,000 on the conservative side. I plan on getting another job at that point. My wife is a teacher and would also collect a pension. The only real retiremen ..read more

Help deciding on new banking, investments, etc

I’m 25, I just recently received an offer for a new job making $120k, I figured now is a good time to take charge of my financials. I have 37k sitting in my savings, as well as $12k in my 401k. I just opened a Roth IRA with Vanguard and am looking to max it at $8k from my savings into a S&P 500 index fund. I currently still bank with the same account I’ve had since I was 10, Frontwave Credit Union. They don’t really offer anything special, so I figure it’s a good time to look for something new. I heard about HYSAs, would that be a good idea to leave my extra savings in? Does anyone have a ..read more

How to get the most interest from savings, what kind of account?

I hear a lot of vague information but don't really know how to look into it on my own. Getting more details is hard too, because the people that talk about it also don't really know specifics, just things they've heard in passing although some of them are pretty good at handling finances. They just don't know the details after so many years to help me figure this stuff out. If I came into 120k, where could I put it to gain the MOST interest from it in whatever duration- like a year or two. And then collect some interest, but not all of it to continue building more? I know about CD accounts, b ..read more

Calculating capital gains as only income source

Apologies for the seemingly obvious question, but all my search results on the subject involved calculating this along with mixing in social security and pretax asset withdrawals, etc. I'm only interested in the simple scenario where I'm retiring at 53 years old and just want to use my taxable brokerage accounts to live off of for a few years. In a hypothetical scenario, if I retired at the beginning of 2024 and my only source of income was selling long-term (held over a year) assets in a regular brokerage account, how does the tax calculation work? Let's say I sold $70,000 in assets (such as ..read more

So I’m in my first post college role and first real “career” job. I’m currently setting up benefits and the healthcare for my wife and I would be $500 a month. This seems a bit steep for me. I’m wondering if I should just pass and shop around. It’s an excellent program but my wife and I almost never use healthcare. No underlying conditions, no vision issues, no dental issues. I am truly sorry if this question is dumb I just don’t have any help understanding this stuff. I’m in VA if it matters. TIA! submitted by /u/TerminallyFriendly [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hello there! Sorry if this is a silly question but I was just wondering if there was anyone out there who might have some more info about this than I could find? I’m 21, working a full time job as well as going to school full-time. I really am focused on saving right now and making as much money as I can. I don’t have the time to get a whole other job with school or I definitely would, but I’ve heard about a couple of ways you could start making passive income. Mostly just the things people talk about that are full on business and shit. and i obviously don’t have the time or resources for tha ..read more

Hey everyone, I got permanently disabled through my job last year with life long chronic pain, I ended up getting $200,000 plus from the settlement. We are both 23 years old, married for 5 years, been together 10 years. How could I use this cash to make our lives amazing! I want to buy a home or somewhere for us to live because we live with my parents and I want to be out, but it’s not a deal breaker is it’s best to stay. Any suggestions would be great!! submitted by /u/Relevant_Tax_3487 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
