I'm finished, but how does my son avoid this?

I've finally accepted that I will never experience professional success. I've come to terms with it and embraced that it just won't happen in my life. But....how does my son avoid this? What can I do, or teach, or help him out to avoid this? I want him to do better than I have. Since I don't know how to be successful in a professional way, I don't know what to do to help him other than "don't do what I did". Thoughts? How can I help him experience career success when he joins the workforce? submitted by /u/khianreaux2019 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Is there much vertical growth after taking a senior level position in academia?

TLDR; I spent quite a bit of time to transition from a career in academia into the PE/ VC world. I am considering going back to academia/ non profit after getting a job offer about 20k more than I currently make - my only worry is that it will be a dead end job with no room for vertical growth.. So a bit more in detail, I currently make about 75k and was offered a job making 95k - both doing what I enjoy. The 75k spot is the bottom of the ladder so I have a lot of room for growth (and I just finish some school so I may get a promotion soon) on the other side the job making 95k is really near ..read more

I know it sound silly, but hey there are many jobs out there that you didn’t even know it does exist. I love playing around with my aesthetics on tumblr and pinterest. I wonder if there’s a job where you can do similar to that? :) submitted by /u/preppyemo [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Safe to make consulting my full time gig?

I’ve been moonlighting doing cybersecurity consulting to small-medium business for $500/hr flat rate, 4 hour minimum. I’m doing about 20hrs / week amongst a few clients that have rotated (only 1 has been going the whole time). It’s been about 6 months of this and the income, even after taxes is still a bit more than my day job. There’s also practically no significant recurring expenses as it’s just me and I don’t need an office and already have my own equipment I use. I’ve got a 6 month emergency fund saved up now, and was wondering if something like this is safe for long-term stability and i ..read more

Film Student Not Sure What to Do After College

Hi, I'm a film student with one year left before I graduate. I applied for a few internships with production and post-production houses and a marketing company for the summer but didn't get any. I honestly don't know what to do with my major after college. I don't really want to work on a Hollywood set with 15 hour days but I would love to do some freelance editing (good at Premiere Pro) or be a videographer for a company, (good at cinematography) or help make commercials. To any people working in jobs like that, how do I make myself qualified for one of these jobs as it seems that I will not ..read more
