Today Arla is commemorating the nation’s favorite seasonal dessert topping with its own official holiday: America’s first-ever National Cream Cheese Frosting Day. To celebrate, I’ve whipped up a delicious cream cheese frosted cake with Arla cream cheese. The frosting was so delicious, it was slightly dangerous to have in my kitchen due to my lack of self-control. For the design, I went with a Danish folk art-inspired pattern as a nod to Arla’s Denmark origins – and individually piped each dot of the pattern to play off folk art’s common use in textile form. Not only does this cream cheese frost ..read more

Retro Wreath Cake for A Beautiful Mess

I don’t know how to put it humbly – I’m completely obsessed with the way this retro wreath cake turned out. I love the idea of this cake – it’s a dessert piece that shines on display at a party and encourages guests to pick off and snack on the candy first, before getting to enjoy the cake. Sound familiar? Yup, it’s essentially just a gingerbread house, but it’s not a house…and it’s not made of gingerbread. Another major difference is that you don’t have to worry about any nightmarish assembly issues occurring with this cake. I don’t know about you, but there’s been many times I’ve worked on ..read more

Buttercream Wreath Cake

Earlier this week I found an extra baked bundt cake in my freezer, so I played around with it a bit and ended at this a couple hours later. A better use of my time probably would’ve been tackling one of the many to-dos on my list for the week, but making a just-for-fun cake found it’s way to the top of the priorities. After I made this guy, I realized that it’s basically just a cake version of THESE cookies I made last year. Clearly, intricate details and holiday wreaths in buttercream-form are becoming an annual tradition in my kitchen. Looking forward to finishing that to-do list tomorrow ..read more

Since moving to LA, I’ve met the most wonderful, creative women. One of those women is Adrianna of A Cozy Kitchen (you’re probably familiar with her incredible cook book). I’ve always admired her work and beautiful food photos from afar, so at the end of last year I went up to her and introduced myself at an event we were both at (well, I was just attending it and she was signing books at one of the tables! lol). It was then that we realized we were neighbors, both residing in Echo Park! We recently planned a baking / cake decorating day and since we’re both OBSESSED with our dogs, it should b ..read more

Rainbow Cake

I made a cake just like this one years ago and failed to get a decent photo of it, so I ended up re-making it again this year. I made it way back in January, then whacked the top tier off and used it as a “Valentine’s Day cake” for my Instagram (not sure if that’s being lazy OR resourceful!). The reason I made it well in advance of St. Patty’s day was because my neighbor’s yard had all these amazing clovers (weeds) pop up, and I just had to take advantage of them before they died. Funny enough, with all the rain we’ve had in Los Angeles, they’re still going strong, so I guess I didn’t need to ..read more

Remember THESE Dog Cupcakes I made for FoodNetwork.com? Well, the fine folks at Food Network asked me to make another fun pet-inspired treat, this time featuring the second favorite household pet – the CAT! (I just made up that statistic, but I’m pretty sure it’s true! ha). But anywho, I love cats too (especially my cat, Minnow), so I was VERY excited to create a cute cat face in cake form. And best of all, it also has a surprise-inside center featuring a cat’s favorite surprise, fish (don’t worry people, they’re gummy fish!).  Head on over to FoodNetwork.com HERE to get the recipe and s ..read more

Hi all! I know it’s been a while. I took some time off from this space because blogging about desserts and parties just didn’t feel right for me personally with everything else that has been going on in America. The thought of celebrating or creating something felt forced with the overwhelming feelings of sadness/anger/disappointment/frustration/bewilderment/etc. that I was experiencing. I’ve been able to process my feelings a bit, and I’m finally feeling a little spark of creativity coming back. I’m hoping that this spark will push me to continue to create more in the coming days and weeks, b ..read more

If you don’t know the name Gold Teeth Brooklyn, I guarantee you’ve at least passed by one of their adorable screen printed greeting cards at some point. I’ve always been a huge fan of their designs which include calendars, cards, totes, notebooks, and more – all screen printed by hand. That said, I was thrilled when Jesse Levison – the woman behind Gold Teeth Brooklyn – asked me to help her with her wedding. With a bride as creative and talented as Jesse, I knew this was a wedding I had to be involved with. I ended up making three cakes and crafted a bunch of gold fringed piñatas and a DJ boot ..read more

As I mentioned last week, I’ve started a YouTube page where I’ll be posting video tutorials. Proper YouTube video tutorials are coming soon, but in the meantime I’ve posted another overhead video I shot this summer. A Watermelon Cake may not sound appealing at the moment since we’ve all switched our focus to Fall, but I thought you’d enjoy the video regardless. And for those of you looking for some seasonal inspiration, you could easily follow along with this process and change the colors and candies to a sweet fall favorite (candy corn-colored cake, anyone?!). If you have a spare moment, it ..read more
