A young Boy Scout had a close encounter with a bear last weekend at New York’s Harriman State Park, about 30 miles away from New York City. Twelve-year-old Henry Ayers was on a camping trip, sleeping out under the stars with the rest of his scout troop, when he was suddenly startled awake. Opening his eyes sometime after midnight, the boy realized that one of his legs was caught in a bear’s jaws.
“It was absolutely crazy!” Ayers told NBC4 News. “I mainly sat up and I screamed! There was a giant ..read more

The author's own knapped stone points, ready for bowseason. Rick Spicer
When I arrive in camp, I let my pack drop from my shoulders. It’s the first day of a four-day backcountry trip, and after putting in the miles, I could use a good meal and a crackling fire. I typically carry a lighter in my pocket and fire steel in my pack.
But when it comes time to ignite the fire, I don’t reach for these gadgets. Instead, I choose a length of goldenrod and set to work on a hearth board of umbrella magnolia. This warms me twice: once by the effort to spin the hand drill to produce the coal, and again w ..read more

It's easy to get turned around in the woods, especially if you're on the trail of game animals. John Hafner
That seems out of place, I thought to myself as the crack of a rifle ripped through the night air. There was another shot immediately after and not far from me. Gunfire is a common sound in the mountains of central Idaho during the October deer season, but only during daylight hours.
The last rays of shooting light had long since filtered through the poplars, and the stars were now bright in the sky. I paused for a moment, then went back to rummaging through the bed of my truck as I s ..read more

Gene Coughlin’s wife hates it when he hunts alone. But the 64-year-old bowhunter prepares as best as he can and goes anyway. The lifelong Montanan has rules: Don’t go anywhere without a shotgun. Load it with alternating slugs and 00 buckshot. Never cow call from the ground. Get meat out fast. Expect to lose some anyway.
When he hikes in to one of his treestands along the Blackfoot River, Coughlin carries that 12-gauge in one hand, his bow in the other. Strapped to his chest is a can of pepper spray and a ..read more

Over the weekend a Connecticut man shared a video of a black bear that broke into a car. In the video, the bear seems to see no issue with where he’s sitting. Police can be seen snapping pictures of the animal and shining a flashlight in its face.
“Lock your doors, bit of an ordeal tonight,” wrote Cody Gillotti in his April 29 Facebook post, in which the video shows The bear appears to be sitting in the front passenger seat of the vehicle and looks pretty relaxed.
