Best for user db?

I want to build a web app that will have python code as backend. Usually what I do is have an aws instance with IP and I use that for full flexibility (and I have both backend and front end code there with nginx) and connect domain to cloudflare for some security. However, now I have a special functionality, I need a user db (authentification, captcha, user db logic) . I heard the best for this is supabase or firebase - they already have this user logic stuff built in, but that is backend as a service to my understanding and I won’t be able to use both that and my python backend. Or am I wron ..read more

How to stop notification duplication? [laravel, jquery] Code review

I beg you please review my code about 'Bell Notification' [Laravel, jQuery] Context: Its a bell notification. It fetches data from the database and sends to the user. if its personal notification (type='personal') it gets sent to the user with that user_id. There may be many global notifications in the database but only 1 will be active (expired =0) at a time. The global notification (type='global') gets sent to everyone. Problem: 1) I don't know what I am doing but I want to keep it with ajax sending request as other way seems harder. Even the some code that works doesnt feel right. Overall ..read more

Independent devs, how much do your top clients pay you each month and what does that cost cover?

I'm finally getting a bit of traction working for myself and I'd like to be able to generate some recurring revenue from clients rather than just a one time payment for a website. The low hanging fruit is hosting, but I feel like I can't really charge much for that given how cheap hosting is, especially for static sites. There's website managements in case clients want to update their websites but would rather have someone make those updates for them, but I'm not really sure how to price this. It also depends on whether a client makes a lot or very little changes to their site. I was thinking ..read more

IOS and pwa.

At my company we are thinking about making a pwa, instead of an Android + iOS app. This way we only need to maintain one client and we can push updates faster. On iOS you can't request a user to install a pwa app and instead we need to present instructions on how to do that. Now this might not be the best user experience, but our clients are not random visitors, so they might be a bit more willing to look past that. Our main goal is to have an app for both iOS and Android, while sharing as much code as possible and sending push notifications to our clients. Offline functionally is not a requi ..read more

Choosing Between Django and Headless CMS for Website Development: Seeking Advice

Hey r/webdev, I've been delving into the decision-making process for a website project I'm working on for a hotel owner. They're keen on having a robust admin interface to manage various aspects of the site, including a gallery, blog, events, emails, and payments. While I've done my fair share of research, I'm still grappling with the decision between using Django for its powerful admin capabilities or exploring the possibility of using an open-source headless CMS like Strapi or Payload to streamline content management and integration with a Next.js frontend. Despite my efforts, I find myself ..read more

Good resources on building an appointments scheduler?

Hi folks I want to build appointment scheduling into an app I’m working on (api backend with a spa frontend), but this isn’t something I have done before. Anyone know any good resources on how to go about building something like that from scratch? Any language is fine as long as the solution is described and explained well. I’m after something that covers the frontend (something like this: https://dribbble.com/shots/23987731-Calendar-UI) as well as the necessary backend. For example I struggle to find a solution on how to draw the appointment box in the exact right spot in the calendar day co ..read more

As the title says, I want to host a second repo on my main site, mainly for modularity, since the contents of the subpage B are quite big now and I'd like a separate gh repo for it without unlinking it from the pages site. submitted by /u/GutiV [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hello, Idris here!. This week I want to share a summarised version of the product lessons we can learn from Figma [You can find the full case study here](https://open.substack.com/pub/indieniche/p/20-billion-figma-acqusition-fallout?r=3q3p07&utm\_campaign=post&utm\_medium=web) Figma, conceived by Dylan, stands out as a collaborative cloud-based web application tailored for designing user interfaces. It made waves when it announced its $20B merger with Adobe in September 2022. However, this union was short-lived, lasting only 15 months, as regulatory concerns in the EU and the United K ..read more
