How to Stay Warm When Travelling in Your RV
The Helpful Hiker | Ideas & Inspiration to help everyone enjoy the outdoor

Comfort is key when you’re travelling in your RV. Whether it’s a short or long journey, you will want to know that you can enjoy every second of your journey from start to end. One of the key factors in comfort is temperature. Being too cold when driving can cause you to feel uncomfortable and stiff. It could also reduce your circulation and cause your hands and feet to go purple, tingly, and numb. A cold environment can also be unenjoyable and even harmful to pets. So, if you’re caravanning with pets, it’s even more important to keep the inside of your vehicle nice and warm for your furry fri ..read more

How to enjoy Winter Outdoor Adventures

I was gifted some items of clothing from adidas for the purposes of this post. All words and opinions are my own. I don’t know about you, but I always find this time of year a struggle. It takes me ages to get used to the clocks going back, and I find that the darkness makes me feel even more tired and sluggish than usual.  Throw in the fact that this is my busy time at work and the weather is often dismal, and it takes an extra effort to get out and spend some time outdoors.  However that is not to say that outdoor adventures should be shelved until the spring. It’s so worthwhile sp ..read more

I was gifted some items of clothing from adidas for the purposes of this post. All words and opinions are my own. It struck me this year that we have got quite good at self catering holidays. For the last 10 years, we have pretty much only holidayed in the UK, either camping or staying in an AirBnB or Center Parcs or similar. This summer we went away with my extended family for a week’s caravan holiday, and had such a great time.  I felt quite smug that we have got it down to a fine art, although it probably shouldn’t have been a surprise given how much practice we’ve had over the years ..read more

Hampshire Pub Walk
The Helpful Hiker | Ideas & Inspiration to help everyone enjoy the outdoor

During our last camping trip, we enjoyed a lovely 3 mile circular walk taking in 3 Hampshire villages. It is largely flat and so suitable for the whole family. The route mostly follows footpaths which may get muddy in the winter, there is also a couple of stretches along roads. I asked at the campsite if they knew of any local walks, and they gave me a printout of this lovely Hampshire pub walk, which starts and finishes at the Abbots Mitre in Chilbolton. I noticed that there were copies at the pub, and the route is also available to be downloaded from the pub’s website. (Hence I am not going ..read more

I was gifted items of clothing from adidas for the purposes of this post. All words and opinions are my own. These days we take a slightly different approach to our camping trips. When it was just Luke and I, we used camping mainly as a means to an end. It meant we could go and explore some stunning areas of the country, enjoy a good hike or day out and then return to the tent later in the day. Nowadays, with two young children in tow, we tend to take things a bit slower and spend more time at the campsite. As our boys get older, we find that what they want from a holiday has changed. There wa ..read more

10 Years of The Helpful Hiker
The Helpful Hiker | Ideas & Inspiration to help everyone enjoy the outdoor

This Bank Holiday weekend I have been looking back over ten years of The Helpful Hiker. I first started this blog back in 2013, after a couple of camping trips. Back then we went on lots of walks and Luke took lots of stunning photos, so I was simply looking for a way to keep track of where we’d been. The first incarnation of The Helpful Hiker was a basic blog on Tumblr (remember Tumblr?!) It started out as a personal project, but I grew to love blogging almost as much as the outdoor adventures, so it took on a life of its own! I used to post regularly and was active in the blogger community ..read more

I don’t know about you, but this last winter has felt like the longest ever. The cold, dark days seemed to go on for ever and have left me feeling distinctly ‘meh’. For a while now I’ve been desperately trying to summon up enough motivation to start running again, or doing something to get some level of fitness back. But the truth is that I spend most days feeling totally overwhelmed just coping with work, the children, general house and life admin, and I just don’t have the energy to make major life changes. Despite being the unhealthiest and unfittest I’ve ever been, and despite knowing that ..read more
