A Day in the Life of a Student in Leicestershire
Psychology Blog

Okay so this may be a slightly too packed day in the life…but the point still stands – there’s so much to do in Leicestershire!    Over the Summer I got the great opportunity to work alongside some UOL, DMU and Loughborough students, the Pathways East Midlands team plus Revolution Viewing on this promotional video. The film took us a total of 3 days to film, which we spent rushing around Leicestershire, eating doughnuts, and braving the very cold/rainy weather to get those perfect angles. But honestly, it was probably one of my favourite memories of this summer! I got to visit some o ..read more

Getting Bad Marks
Psychology Blog

So, it’s been a couple of months since University has started, which means that a whole host of deadlines has probably passed and you’re just starting to get your marks back for them.   I got my first essay back a few days ago and let me tell you…I was not impressed with myself at all. I knew I struggled writing the essay, but I was still disappointed and surprised to get my mark back – I even cried a little bit, because I really thought that going into second year meant that I had the skills and knowledge from last year to help me with my coursework. But, after feeling sorry for myself f ..read more

I love the University of Leicester for many reasons. One of the big reasons I do, is due to the support you get as a student who has a specific learning disability.   But before I get into all that, let’s rewind back to a few years..   So, I’ve always struggled with handwriting…even since I was younger. My parents and teachers put it down to just a matter of “laziness”, and thought I’d grow out of it sooner or later. But A-Levels came, and after a teacher refused to mark my mock exam paper because it was completely unreadable, I was forced to then use a laptop for forthcoming exams a ..read more

21 Things I’ve Learnt At University
Psychology Blog

So, in October, I celebrated my 21st birthday, and as tradition, I wrote out a list of 21 things I’ve learnt in those years of living. I thought it may be a good idea to write another list…but University style, as there’s so much I’ve learnt from the past year and a half of attending it. Here we go!   Do the reading when it is set, not 2 days before the exam Always back up your work on more than one device…as I found out that USB sticks tend to break at the most inconvenient of times Sometimes, sleep and rest is more important than work Stop stressing about the small things! Not everyone ..read more

Adjusting to University Life

So I have just finished up my third week of Second year and let me tell you something…I feel just as lost and confused as I did at the start of last year. With things like deadlines, trying to find a society to fit in with, and trying to keep up with the recommended reading – the first few weeks of University can be mentally and physically draining. It can also be off-putting to those of you Freshers out there as you may feel out of place or feel like you made the wrong decision to come to University. But! If I remember correctly from last year, all this newness settles down eventually. It j ..read more

University 101: Getting Organised
Psychology Blog

If I could go back in time to Enna’s first day, to give her one piece of advice, it would be this:   GET YOURSELF ORGANISED. AND FAST.   Because you see, I didn’t think the jump from A-Levels to University was going to be THAT big. But, once again (if you’ve seen from my previous University 101 posts), I was wrong. It’s a tremendous leap in fact. One that you must adjust yourself to, in order to do well.   It took me almost half of the year to nail being organised, so I hope some of these tips can help you out:   Get kitted up – there’s no use going into battle without you ..read more

Why Psychology at the University of Leicester?
Psychology Blog

I started being interested in Psychology at a young age after reading books like Catcher in the Rye and Perks of Being a Wallflower – both of which have leading characters whom suffer from some sort of trauma or mental illness. Being a film lover too, movies such as Along Came a Spider, Prisoners and One Flew Over a Cuckoo’s Nest really helped fuel my interest in Psychology even more. Between revising for my A-levels and watching/reading endless scripts and movies about Psychology, I would mentor young kids who were suffering from behavioural problems at school. This, of course, added to my cu ..read more

UCAS Personal Statements: The DO’s and DON’Ts
Psychology Blog
by Enna

I know, I know…personal statements can be daunting.   It took me around 5 different drafts, 3 different teachers and 8 different friends to “perfect” my personal statement. I started writing it long before my UCAS application was due as it really does take a lot of time and effort. Many people do not think it’s difficult but it’s probably the hardest bit about your application, as it can be sometimes hard to talk about your strengths, weaknesses, goals and passions. So, after speaking to my mentees who are currently working on their UCAS applications, and remembering back to my own person ..read more
