Yesterday’s Scotland team announcement for their final Autumn Nations Cup game against Ireland featured a new cap that has raised a few eyebrows in Scottish circles – that of South African born and raised Fly Half Jaco van der Walt.  His maiden start comes after qualifying on residency grounds and is hot on the heels of fellow Edinburgh teammate Duhan van der Merwe and Glasgow Warriors Prop Oli Kebble. The capital side joins Leinster as the Pro14’s top two seeds in the up and coming 2020/2021 European champions cup season after a comprehensive season that sees them top their conference. Glasgow Warriors will also qualify under the updated format as well though they will more likely be within the third tier of clubs to join from the Pro14. Under the new Champions cup format the tournament will have 24 teams under two conferences for want of a better word. Starting to look familiar? It probably should as the champions cup seems to have taken a leaf out of the Pro14 books when it comes to the ..read more

Scotland Rugby
by Scotland Rugby News

Predicting a possible British & Irish Lions team just over a year from the tour of South Africa would normally be considered pure folly. However, as has become abundantly clear, the world we’re currently inhabiting is anything but normal. With the 2020 Six Nations called to an abrupt halt, the Summer tours looking all but cancelled and even the November tests now in doubt, we might not actually see much international rugby played in anger before the Lions takes place. Gatland hasn’t shown too much favour to Scottish players in the past Instead of 12 or so tests per side to sift through, Wa ..read more

With the Pro14 looking like this season has reached a premature conclusion we’ll look towards the players who have signed or renewed their contracts this season who look set to take part in Danny Wilson’s maiden season for Glasgow. After being the Scottish forwards coach he has since moved to head coach for Glasgow, though not without some scrutiny. He has done fantastic work with Cardiff Blues so we can remain hopeful that this trend will continue rather than that of his tenure as forwards coach. With the signings this season we can already see his squad beginning to take shape so let’s dive ..read more

With the Six Nations, Pro14 and all domestic rugby either cancelled or postponed due to Covid-19, it looks like the season is well and truly over. Most of us will be reading this from lockdown with little more than old replays to keep us amused. So we thought it would be the right thing, nay our civic duty, to keep the Scottish rugby public entertained…if only for a short while. Instead of pouring over the remains of the truncated season, we decided it would be more fun to create the Big Fat Scottish Rugby Quarantine Quiz – a devilish challenge that starts off lolling you into a false sense of ..read more

Why Scotland must beat Wales this weekend
Scotland Rugby
by Scotland Rugby News

Every Six Nations game is hugely important, but few could have as big an impact on Scotland’s future than this Saturday’s match against Wales. With the much heralded Super Saturday now a damp squib thanks to Coronavirus fears leading to cancelled games, you might be forgiven for thinking that Scotland’s final game was being fought for little more than pride and a slightly higher placed finish. But you’d be wrong. A victory on Saturday could very well be the difference between Scotland reaching the knockout phases of the next Rugby World Cup, or once again being dumped out in the pool st ..read more

Following the now infamous Sunday Times Interview with Finn Russell at the weekend, Scottish Rugby have released a video featuring Gregor Townsend’s side of events.
