The WBRU Council of Clubs are pleased to announce a new format for the 2024 Premier Club Competition after reviewing the 2022 and 2023 season post COVID. The WBRU Council of Clubs recognizes that the landscape of club rugby is continually changing and therefore must be proactive in the approach to how rugby is delivered in the region. Congratulations to WBRU Board member Robyn Cherry-Campbell on being selected to be a participant on the NZR Women in Rugby Governance and Mentorship Programme 2024. 49 women have been selected across New Zealand to participate in the program. The WBRU have the pleasure in announcing that Reece Robinson will continue as the Head Coach for of the Copthorne Wairarapa Bush Heartland team for 2024 after an improved season under his guidance in his first year as Head Coach for 2023. The Copthorne Wairarapa Bush Heartland team finished 6th in the round robin competition meaning they hosted a semi-final against West Coast in the Lochore Cup section of the competition. Rugby continues to grow in the Wairarapa with an increase of registered players at all levels. Junior rugby players number grew by 7%, College aged students, 3% and adult rugby players, 11%. The total number of registered rugby players in the Wairarapa for 2023 is, 2,277. A 17% increase from 2019 when Covid disrupted our rugby season and a 5% growth from 2022. They’ve won all three of their home games conquering Ngāti Porou East Coast (32-31), Poverty Bay (30-24), and King Country (35-26).
