The NMI Toyota Noord-Suid tournament 2024 is set to be remembered for the surprise package team of tournament Jeppe defeating Grey College 22-19. Yet there plenty of very good match-ups and other teams who surprised with their match day performances. Of the 23 matches, more than half were decided by two-scores or less. This is excellent considering that a number of other matches over this threshold, also produced valued entertainment and were perhaps closer than the final scores suggest. The two best examples are probably Jeppe going into halftime level with Boishaai before going down 45-19 an ..read more

March 2024 Jeppe has proven to the surprise package of this year’s NMI Noord-Suid tournament after putting in two excellent performances in what has was described as a death sentence tournament fixture list – Paarl Boys’ High School and Grey College – three days apart. After an excellent first match first half against Paarl Boishaai in which the Jeppe Boys’ kept their esteemed opponents to 19-19, new Jeppe head coach Drickus Venter said “ we need to replicate it in the 2nd half…” And that is exactly what Jeppe did against South Africa’s top rugby school Grey College. After putting in a shift i ..read more

March 2024 Paul Roos claimed top spot early on in the season by beating Affies 30-25 in the most eagerly anticipated schoolboy rugby match of 2024 to date. However the match turned out to be one of the most bizarre high profile matches. Lightning First the threat of lightning results in play being suspended after just 9-minutes. Affies pack dominates Of all the factors, I wonder if anyone expected the Affies pack to dominate quite the way they did. Affies BMT deserts them Several red zone moments cried out for focus and composure but the moments seem to get to Affies and they ended up leaving ..read more

March 2024 There is a bit of a feel good story about how this unique match came to be. The Rondebosch boys’ missed out on the great experience of an overseas tour. It’s difficult to fill that void. Durban High School then played small part in making the missed opportunity a little easier to absorb by arranging a once-in-a-lifetime chance to play in the curtain raiser to a big pro rugby URC match at Kings Park. So at midday on Saturday, 23 March 2024, it is Durban High School versus Rondebosch Boys’ High School. “School” are the early season favourites to top the KZN rankings while Bosch are d ..read more

30 names is not enough to list the number of good players who will be in action at this year’s NMI Toyota Noord-Suid tournament. It is little wonder it is considered the premier festival of the Easter / first-term school holidays. I bet without any effort you could roll off the names of 15 other must watch players who don’t appear below ..read more

Test match season is about to get underway. The first of the PNCD’s (potential national championship deciders) takes place at NMI Menlyn Noord-Suid on Saturday 23 March 2024. Affies hosts Paul Roos in a must-watch match that is set to go straight to the top of the SuperSport Schools app viewership rankings for the year-to-date. For 2023, a trackback of the PNCD’s came down to five key matches: 31/03/2023 Grey College 33-12 Paarl Gim – Grey, boosted by a December rugby tour, just seemed on a different level to the school that had beaten them in 2021 and 2022. 15/04/2023 Outeniqua 17-19 Grey Col ..read more

10. Northwood 10 Hilton 7Northwood put a lot of effort into preparing a team that could step up and record away wins at venues like Gilfillan in the Midlands. Although they had to grind out this one against a determined yet lower rated than usual Hilton, one has to remember this was the Knight’s bogey team – ending their longest KZN losing streak dating back to 2014. Statement made! 9. Diamantveld 29 Trio 27 The arrival of Vlos and Oloff from Boland Landbou are seemingly paying immediate dividends. With back-to-back wins against Voortrekker and now Trio, the Diamands have overcome their two ma ..read more
