Arm Balances: Building the Foundations of Strength and Stability This year our studio’s overall theme is Sadhana, or personal/spiritual practice, and Seva, to serve, and this month we’re lifting into spring with arm balances!  Through the dynamic practice of arm balances, we have opportunity to strengthen our physical bodies and can deepen our Sadhana, the disciplined commitment to our practice. Did you know that we also have a theme for each quarter? Last quarter was all about Repetition by checking in with our familiar and common movements. We check in to these places often to make sure ..read more

Transitions: Movement from Pose to Pose Our theme through this first quarter has been repetition, which has had our focus on the more habitual aspects of our yoga practice like Halfway Lifts, Mountain Pose, Chaturangas, and now: *que drumroll*  transitions!!  Think right foot forward into Warrior One or Halfway Lift to Forward Fold, there are sooo many aspects of our flow we do repetitiously, eventually to the point of rote, or mindless, habit. Have you ever driven to work and when you got there, wondered if you actually stopped at those stop signs? You must’ve, right?  Sometim ..read more

Chaturanga Our fresh Funky Focus is all about how we can make Chaturangas accessible for our bodies. In Sanskrit, the language of yoga, Chaturanga Dandasana translates to Four Limb Staff Pose (Chatur = Four, Anga = Limb, Danda = Staff/Spine, Asana = Pose.) You’re probably familiar with Seated Staff Pose! Chaturanga is a full body strengthener, utilizing each major muscle group, but can also be an incredible space-creator and spine lengthener! We most commonly practice Chaturangas as a transitional Asana between high plank and Cobra/Updog- but did you know there are sooo many ways to utilize th ..read more

Dial Up, Dial Down, Dial In; Deepening Your Practice Workshop March 10th, 1:30-4:00pm in Eastown We say it all the time, but what the Funk does it even mean to “Dial” our practice? To do this, you’ll often hear our Funky teachers offering opportunities to “Dial Up,” “Dial Down,” or “Dial In” with a posture. So what does that mean for your practice? Dial UP usually refers to incorporating more strength and doesn’t always mean ‘harder’: sometimes ..read more

Look at this sweet new Funky Buddha logo! And why we’ve kept the Ruby all these years <3  Where does the ruby come from?    This Kabir poem:   The small ruby everyone wants has fallen out on the road.   Some think it is East of us, others West of us   Some say, “among primitive earth rocks,”   others, “in the deep waters.”   Kabir’s instinct told him it was inside,   And what it was worth –   And he wrapped it up carefully in his heart cloth.     Kabir was a 14-15th century poet and myst ..read more
