$PROMPT $PS1 automatically set in zsh

I changed from bash to zsh on a mac upgrade and now cannot change my terminal settings. As I moved from an old to new machine, which inherited the old settings. Opening a new terminal gives: Last login: Thu Apr 25 17:26:59 on ttys000 PROMPT='%m:%1~ %n%#' ~ % PROMPT='%m:%1~ %n%#' Chriss-MacBook-Pro:~ cws% When the last line in my .zshrc is: PROMPT='%/ %# ' PS1='%F{blue}%~ %(?.%F{green}.%F{red})%#%f ' I assume that PROMPT is being sourced from another file, but cannot see where by searching. Does anyone know in which order the bash_rc profile type files are sourced when opening a terminal ..read more

What is this "Distant Future Corp" startup item added after a Microsoft update?
Stack Exchange

This item just appeared after a Microsoft update. "Distant Future Corp" has a couple of apps on the app store and only a few staff. They appear to deal with sharing of things like link collections, but it’s hard to find out much about them or their CEO(?) Steve Gehrman (as a Flutter developer he has a GitHub account and allied company Cocoatech developed Path Finder, which I brew installed and then uninstalled—awhile before this MS addition—as it failed to do what I needed). It seems impossible from an hour or more searching to find out why Microsoft has added this to my startup items, or wha ..read more

Fix 'broken' live photos that don't play when clicked on?

The problem is very simple; I have a photos library with many live photos. But the live photos simply won't play. It's probably the same issue as described here. Three things I've tried I tried these 3 things I tried repairing the photo library. I tried exporting unmodified originals so I could get to the raw .jpg and .mov files, but I get this error: The export operation failed to create files for 1716 photos; the first 100 are listed (I suspect there are 1716 live photos). I tried to check if perhaps the video component of the live photos were simply lost or missing, but I find eviden ..read more

Can I prevent turning wifi off or entering airplane mode on an unlocked iPhone?

My concern is robbery with a thief grabbing my unlocked iPhone and running away with my device out of my control. The first thing the thief should do is to put the phone in airplane mode to prevent tracking or a remote lock. Is there a setting to block the airplane mode with a password ..read more

Hide cursor when hover a specific app
Stack Exchange

Is there a method, such as a shortcut or app, to selectively hide/unhide the cursor only within a specific application? I'm currently using BetterTouchTool, which allows me to globally toggle the cursor's visibility with a shortcut. However, this isn't ideal for my needs. I'm specifically looking to hide the cursor when it hovers over certain notetaking apps, enabling me to focus on annotating without distraction. Ideally, the cursor would reappear automatically (not require to use any shortcut/action) once it moves outside of the notetaking app's window, allowing me to use other applications ..read more

Should ordinary web users somehow implement end-to-end protection of their DNS requests?
Stack Exchange

I've read that, when browsers send website requests, the DNS lookup part of the request is not encrypted, and is therefore a security vulnerability. Also, I'm aware that routers have DNS settings, over which WiFi users have no control. Can and should ordinary Safari users, accessing shared WiFi in various locations, implement end-to-end protection of the DNS requests originating from their Apple mobile devices? If yes, then how? Would it help security if users switch to Firefox or another browser ..read more

Activate non-active window by clicking the mouse wheel

I want to be able to make a non-active window active via mouse wheel click instead of having to left-click inside the window. Useful when using CAD and switching back and forth between necessary apps. Left-clicking in CAD (BricsCAD in this case) will make the window active but it will also click and selects an entity or creates a selection window immediately, which isn't desirable. So, how can I use a middle click (or similar) to activate a window ..read more

IPhone 12 Pro showing weak sensitivity when doing “very gentle” tap/touch. What could be the issue?

I bought a refurbished iPhone 12 Pro yesterday, from a third party mobile shop. Since the first day, the screen does not recognise touch when I tap “very gently”. For example, when I am tapping any icon (or key) “very gently”, the touch is not recognised. I have to do proper touch always. I used iPhone (iPhone 13 brand new) before in my life during 2023 and I never faced this. The screen was very sensitive to even very tiny/mild touch. What could be the issue with my current refurbished iPhone 12 Pro? (I live in Portugal, the shop is in Portugal as well. iOS version 17.4.1 ..read more

PhotoBooth: Export multiple photos at once
Stack Exchange

It there a user-friendly way to copy multiple photos from PhotoBooth at once? For some really stupid reason, maybe this is a bug, if you select multiple photos there (e.g., by using Shift-click) and try to copy them (e.g, by pressing Command-C or by selecting menu bar > Edit > Copy) to a different place outside PhotoBooth, only the single photo is copied to the clipboard. I can copy multiple photos at once by opening the ~/Pictures/Photo Booth Library/Pictures folder, but I would prefer a more user-friendly way, that is, without leaving PhotoBooth. Is it possible somehow? upd.: Yes, this ..read more
