To save a file to the last folder you have used in Finder

Here is what I mean. For example, usually you save your Safari downloads to ~/Downloads. But today you have found a useful PDF on the web, and you want to save it to ~/Documents/your_project. You have never saved files from Safari to this folder, and therefore you won't see this folder in "Recent Places" of the Safari's Save As dialog window (see the screenshot). You can press Shift-Command-G to open Finder's Go to Folder pop-up window, but what next? The list of folders in this pop-up window doesn't have to include the ~/Documents/your_project folder. There are two workarounds I'm aware of ..read more

Can I block programs from preventing sleep?

Ever since I "upgraded" to Sonoma, I've had occasional, severe battery drain when my MacBook should be sleeping or hibernating. I'm now running the latest, Sonoma 14.4.1. My battery drains way too far. Here's an example: I ran pmset -g log and discovered this, which suggests Skype prevented sleep for around five hours! Why do some webpages not load when connecting to an institution wifi?
Stack Exchange

I am currently having issues connecting with my Mac (Sonoma 14.4.1) to certain webpages using the wifi of my institution, and I am completely clueless about why this is happening, because from my understanding this problem is limited to Macs connecting to the wifi. The problem is that some websites (arstechnica.com and news.ycombinator.com are a couple, but I found more) do not load, and I cannot upload images on Notion (and sometimes Slack, but that's slightly more reliable). Things I checked: The web pages are not down. The issue is limited to Macs connected to the wifi. I tested Android ph ..read more

How can I start recording a video with as few actions as possible on my iPhone?
Stack Exchange

While that might sound like an easy question to answer, unfortunately it's not. I have an iPhone 6s running iOS 15.8.2. The most obvious thing to do is with the screen locked, swipe left and start recording. Only problem: camera app has a bad habit of remembering the last selection and that does not help to quickly start recording. And no, the setting to not remember the last action is ineffective. Unfortunately. Next thing I tried was to voice activate it. But that was too far fetched, the microphone was always on, it was draining the battery and I wasn't even close to achieving what I wanted ..read more

How to copy an exact version of an app from iPad to iPad?
Stack Exchange

I have two iPads where I am using a particular app. On iPad A, I have updated to a new version of the app and discovered that the app has been modified so strongly that it became unusable. On iPad B, I still have the old version that I am used to, which works perfect for me. Is there some way to copy the app from iPad B to A, so that I have the desired version on both? Thanks for any hints ..read more

Macbook Pro 2013 - Unable to boot after attempting to remove Kali Linux partition

After attempting to remove a Kali Linux partition through Disk Utility on macOS High Sierra, I ended up with a drive that had a type of just FFFFFFF-FFFFF. I proceeded to try to fix that through using Internet Recovery, where I entered the following commands into Terminal: gpt -r show disk0 diskutil umountDisk disk0 gpt remove -i 2 disk0 gpt add -i 2 -b 409640 -s 431203056 -t 7C3457EF-0000-11AA-AA11-00306543ECAC disk0 This removed the partition type from being F, however, I am unsure if that led to the fact that I cannot access the drive's full storage. (I also somehow have 24 partitions ..read more

Official source for OS version 14.0 for creating bootable drive

I am trying to create bootable drives for various versions of Mac OS. In particular, I would like to create an installer for the original version of Sonoma (14.0). However, I do not see this version listed at this site: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102662 I also don't see it available in the downloads on the developer page. Is there an official source for acquiring 14.0? PS: I found How can I download an older version of OS X/macOS?, and this is useful and contains some older versions of Sonoma, but not 14.0. I strongly feel that at some point in history, there was a page or API you could a ..read more

Simple alternative to time machine that actually allows a full restore without internet connection and OS reinstallation
Stack Exchange

I just attempted to restore a time machine backup after the latest Sonoma upgrade severely degraded several applications. When I selected a version I wanted to restore to on the recovery screen (created on an earlier version of Sonoma), I was informed that I would need to reinstall Sonoma first by downloading it from Apple over the internet. This was surprising to me and does not meet my expectations for how Time Machine works. If I only wanted to save selected files from the hard drive, then there are simpler, less buggy, cross platform options for doing this other than Time Machine. Is there ..read more

Improving iPhone/iPad GPS accuracy by using RTK correction data
Stack Exchange
by Ryan Griggs

I am seeking to improve the accuracy of iOS device GPS data, for use in a GPS mapping app. To do this, RTK (Realtime Kinematic) correction data must be applied to the raw GPS unit's output. Does iOS support the direct application of RTK (NTRIP) data to the GPS module's output, before passing this data to requesting apps? Is there a configuration setting in iOS itself to enable this feature, or a third-party app that could run incoming GPS data through corrections before it gets passed on to the requesting app ..read more
