Setting up a card game

I'm designing a card game, and I have a question about how many cards should be in play to keep things moving at a reasonable pace. There are two decks, A and B (categories and words, respectively) Deck A has 78 cards Deck B has 148 cards Each player has a hand of m cards from deck A. There are n cards from deck B on the table. The objective of the game is to identify groups of three words from the cards on the table that fit one of the category cards in your hand. (Collect those 4 cards, draw another card from deck A, replenish the table from deck B, etc.) Out of the 11,544 possible pairs of ..read more

Favorite accessible/recreational pre-uni problems/sources?

I know "favorite problem" threads come up here semi-regularly since I've googled some of them. I hope I provide enough parameters here to make this thread non-redundant. I'm a math teacher at a decidedly non-elite American high school. I like to throw out a fun challenge problem to my colleagues and enthusiastic students every Friday. The goal is to get people talking about mathematics and generally useful problem-solving techniques. The only absolute restriction is no required calculus or university mathematics. Ideally, problems should... Be concisely stated, or at least be contextually fu ..read more

Seeking Function: Alternating Sequence of Zeros and Ones

I'm searching for a single mathematical function f(x) that generates a sequence of only zeros and ones for a series of consecutive whole numbers. The range for the variable "x" can start at either 0 or 1 and increase by increments of 1. The sequence I need from the function is either 0, 1, 0, 1,... or 1, 0, 1, 0,.... Does anyone have any suggestions for such a function? submitted by /u/lakeseaside [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

As a title says, I’m graduated, but I’m 100% sure that within the next 2 to 3 years I want to go back to school to get a masters degree in either Applied Math (measure theory/stochastics) or Statistics (Time Series Analysis) I’ve already graduated (T15 mathematics and economics minor in CS), and I haven’t ever published or helped author any research, other than getting good GRE scores is there anything that graduate school is really look for? I’m going to try to read Folland’s Analysis/Measure Theory book to keep my analysis skills sharp while I’m in the workforce. Are essays that important o ..read more

Question about Pi

If Pi is infinite, that means that it has to have every combination of numbers possible. So does that mean that at someplace in Pi it starts counting up every number sequentially? And if it does then would that not mean that it can’t do every combination of numbers that it hadn’t done until that point can’t be done? submitted by /u/FlapJack127 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
