Kana Wine
Texas Wine Lover
by Jeff Cope

I have known Lindsay Kana for years back when she worked for a company as a consultant helping other wineries around the U.S. It was a pleasure to hear that she and her husband Shawn were opening Kana Wine in Bastrop, Texas. They were able to obtain the location from another winery that was closing on Chestnut Street, and they opened Kana Wine Tasting Lounge in February 2023. Driving from Houston to the Hill Country, I often pass through Bastrop along the way, but I could never make the hours work when Kana Wine was open until recently. Bastrop’s downtown is very popular with its many shops ..read more

Texas Wine Takes Over the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo
Texas Wine Lover
by Robin English-Bircher

The rodeo may be over in San Antonio, but the impact Texas wine has had on it has not. This has been a banner year for Texas wine, collecting over 100 medals, including the Grand Champion. For those who missed out on the fun this year, next year is not too far away. What should a rodeo visitor expect? Quite a bit of Texas wine. Texas wine has continued to make a strong showing at the 2024 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Wine Competition. This year’s big win by Adega Vinho saw to that. Like many Texas based competitions, the San Antonio Rodeo welcomes Texas wines. These wines do compete alo ..read more

Season Three Vineyard
Texas Wine Lover

Nestled among the picturesque landscape of Briggs, Texas, Season Three Vineyard is a winery where it is encouraged for you to slow down, unwind, and indulge in the simple pleasures of life. Owners John and Marion Vance opened their haven’s tasting room in 2022. After an aha moment in 2018, John and Marion decided they were going to plant a vineyard and open a winery. John’s family had owned land near Briggs since 1879 named YX Ranch. This was the perfect location for their ideas, so they left their Houston corporate jobs and embracing their small-town lifestyle, moved to Briggs and began thei ..read more

Happy 13th Anniversary to Texas Wine Lover!
Texas Wine Lover

I find it amazing it has been 13 years already since I created the Texas Wine Lover (TWL) blog on March 20th, 2011. Time sure flies! When I am asked what Texas Wine Lover is, I say that it started as a blog, but it soon became much more than a blog with many resources such as the Texas winery listings, Texas vineyard listings, and more. Last year was a continuation of the massive additions I did with the website Guide, Plan Your Trip, and the Texas Wine Lover mobile app which further enhances the Texas wine resources available. I didn’t think of the consequences after I added the new addition ..read more

Rarig Ross Winemaker Profile
Texas Wine Lover

One of the newer wineries in downtown Fredericksburg is Ferris & Fletch Wine Co. Rarig and Ellery Ross owned a custom crush company in California and after visiting Fredericksburg and the surrounding area, they knew they wanted to raise their children in Fredericksburg. They started Ferris & Fletch Wine Co. in 2021 and Ross began making Texas wines with a local winery. They loved the area so much that they are in the process of building Fitzwilliam Sparkling Wines behind their current tasting room on Main Street in Fredericksburg. Rarig Ross has been very busy, and we are proud to pre ..read more

Hamilton Pool Vineyards & Farm
Texas Wine Lover

Before the recent Hill Country Wine Symposium, I made a point to visit some Texas wineries I have not yet visited. One of those was Hamilton Pool Vineyards & Farms. I knew how to get to Hamilton Pool Vineyards & Farms because it was the former location of Westcave Cellars. After driving through the entrance, I drove through the estate vineyard and arrived at the house and tasting room. So far, it looked similar to the previous winery, but when I entered the tasting room, all things changed. The new tasting room was almost the entire size of the tasting room building and was built for ..read more

Montepulciano Gives You a Little Taste of Italy in Texas
Texas Wine Lover
by Amie Nemec

The Montepulciano grape is easily confused with Vino Nobile de Montepulciano which is the Sangiovese-based red wine from the Montepulciano region in Tuscany, Italy. The Montepulciano variety is the second most planted in the country, next to Sangiovese. Montepulciano is the primary grape in the DOCG wines Offida Rosso, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Colline Teramane, Rosso Conero, and the DOC wine Rosso Piceno Superiore. DOCG stands for ‘di origins controllers e grantita‘ and is the highest wine classification in Italy. All DOCG wines are analyzed and tested by government-li ..read more
