The One Page Novel Story Structure

The One Page Novel is a storytelling framework that shows you the big picture. As unlikely as it may sound, you really can condense and organise the plot of an entire novel on one sheet of paper. It was this simplification that helped me finish writing a novel for the very first time, and it can help you too! If you… Don’t know where to start. Have trouble finishing stories you begin. Are feeling discouraged by flat or unconvincing characters. Can’t find a way to tie up loose ends. … then I think you’ll LOVE the One Page Novel! Zettelkasten for Writers
E.A. Deverell Creative Writing Blog

What if you could hold a conversation with your book notes? This was the idea that first tempted me to try the Zettelkasten Method, developed by Niklas Luhmann in the 1950s. The basic method is deceptively simple… The Zettelkasten Method Here is the Zettelkasten method, in its simplest form: Assign each index card a unique number. Write a “nugget” of information on each card. Cross-reference cards using their unique numbers. + a few more nuances: Title each card to make it easy to see the topic at a glance. Insert a card between two numbers using alphanumerics (e.g. 1a ..read more

Myriorama Cards to Print
E.A. Deverell Creative Writing Blog
by Eva

Myriorama cards are slices of landscape paintings that can be arranged in any order to form continuous scenes. They were invented in the early 19th century by the French artist, Jean-Pierre Brès, as a genteel amusement and an aid to practice drawing composition. I first heard Sir Philip Pullman recommend them for writing inspiration in his BBC Imagine interview. They also make an appearance in The Secret Commonwealth! Since I couldn’t find a set to purchase, I did what I usually do: I printed my own. This isn’t the same set that Sir Philip uses (his set has 24 cards according to this articl ..read more

The new His Dark Materials TV series started today! But that’s no excuse to shirk our writing duties… especially if, like me, you’re currently engaged in writing 50,000 words a month for NaNoWriMo! Complete this word crawl to enjoy Northern Lights (and your own story) in a new light… What is a word crawl? A word crawl is a succinct narrative with embedded writing prompts. Many word crawls take existing stories, and reformat them for fans to enjoy. They can be great motivation to get a lot of writing done! Word crawls seem to have emerged in the NaNoWriMo forums, and the first recorded word cr ..read more

Alethiometer Studies 101

To celebrate the launch of The Secret Commonwealth, I thought I would share this deck of alethiometer cards I created. As alethiometers are even rarer in our world than in Lyra’s, I hope these cards can help you hone your skills in their stead. Click here to download the cards (ZIP) Printing Your Cards I recommend taking the PDF file down to your local copy shop and asking them to print the pages double-sided on thick card. They may even be able to cut them apart roughly for you, but you’ll probably need to finish them off at home. Once you’ve cut your cards to size, you might like to use a ..read more
