Welcome to the first post in a new series called “An Art Historian’s Guide” — we’ll be starting with impressionist museums in Paris. This series will be my guide to museums and artistic movements around the world.
As an art historian, how I interact with museums is different than the average person strolling through them. My goal is to provide other art lovers a thorough guide to hidden gem museums, artworks, and a deeper understanding of these institutions. I want to make art historical knowledge accessible for people who don’t have degrees!
This guide will be a thorough walkthrough o ..read more

This is part 1 of a two-part MIT News feature examining new job creation in the U.S. since 1940, based on new research from Ford Professor of Economics David Autor. Part 2 is available here.

Three years later, they made their famous first airplane flight in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. So, on the next U.S. census, in 1910, the brothers each called themselves “Inventor, aeroplane.” There weren’t too many of those around at the time, howeve ..read more

It’s 10 am at the sunny Spanish marina in Ametlla de Mar, Tarragona. A banner that reads “Tuna tour – Possibly one of the best adventures of your life” stands square on the jetty in front of a slick white catamaran, ready to take tourists to scuba dive with “wild Atlantic bluefin tuna in their own habitat,” as the tour’s site explains. I’m asked to grin for a photo as I climb aboard to the party song, “That’s the Way I Like It.” We’re about to head three miles offshore, just enough time to watch the tour company’s promotional video.

In Matthew Roach’s two years as vital statistics manager for the Arizona Department of Health Services, and 10 years previously in its epidemiology program, he has witnessed a trend in mortality rates that has rural health experts worried.
As Roach tracked the health of Arizona residents, the gap between mortality rates of people living in rural areas and those of their urban peers was widening.
The health disparities between rural and urban Americans have long been documented, but a recent report from the Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service ..read more

Breaking up is never easy — for both parties.
The person who had to tell the other person it’s not working anymore and the person who had to hear the words.
You go from being united as a pair, to being alone as an individual.
And as daunting as that may sound before you started the relationship, you were by yourself.
A stand-alone individual.
What you need to do is go back to being in that mind space.
Doing for yourself.
Let’s go through some things you should and shouldn’t do.
Do Not Think About Them Moving On
Don’t come and kill yourself and drown yourself in sadness by thinking abou ..read more

Our world is increasingly plastic. Back in the 1950s, humanity produced just 5 million metric tons of plastic per year; today it’s 400 million metric tons. Since plastic can take hundreds or thousands of years to biodegrade, pretty much all of it is still around, except for the roughly 20 percent that’s been burned. By some estimates, there are now eight gigatons of accumulated plastic on Earth — twice as much as the weight of all animal life.
Much of this plastic is still in use, in products like cars and homes, but a lot is junk; 40 percent of plastic production goes ..read more

Two heroes come together in this ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ trailer
The first Deadpool movie was a smash hit, and took audiences on a wild ride. Deadpool 2 told the next chapter of this series, and had this antihero battle some deadly foes. It was no surprise when a sequel was announced, and fans went nuts over the Deadpool and Wolverine teaser. Yesterday we got our first trailer for this upcoming sequel and here is what I thought of it.

David Horowitz describes himself as a “lifelong civil rights activist,” though he’s recently only concerned himself with the rights of white people. Horowitz is a mentor to Stephen Miller, one of the authors of the Trump immigration policy featuring separating brown children from their families and promoter of white nationalism. In 2001, Horowitz published an ad in several college publications, “Ten Reasons Why Reparations for Blacks is a Bad Idea for Blacks — and Racist Too.” Here are the reasons he gives:
