This week I want to further explore a deep secret that the world’s best leaders all know, and all the others that toil in the land of mediocrity say is a bunch of “Fluff!”: Developing your Emotional Intelligence or “EQ”.
High EQ = High Results
EQ has been studied for years. What is known about it is that what we call Emotional Intelligence is what we have developed in our Limbic Brains – the part of our brains that has been developed over the last hundreds of thousands of years or so… It is where all of our “feelings” are centered. Intuition. Emotions.
Leaders that have a ‘high level of EQ’ co ..read more

Problem Finders
The world is full of Problem Finders. They are everywhere. In fact, most organizations are staffed to the rafters with people that are extremely adept at finding problems and pointing them out to anyone who will listen. They will point out what is wrong with the leadership, processes, policies, procedures, products, customers, … you name it, they’ll find it. However, when they are asked to suggest a solution, they will often say something like: “I don’t get paid nearly enough for that!”
Problem Solvers
Those who want to be valued as team members that the business cannot live wi ..read more

This is part two in a blog series where I am exploring ways to help you deep dive your business, your team and yourself, to help you get inspired and reinvent.
In Part One, I explored some ways to look at your business to build some resiliency as we face more fear, uncertainty and doubt (FUD) about the coming year and how business as usual (BAU) is not going to cut anymore. One strategy I talked about, I’m going to unpack further here, today…
The Pareto Principle
In other words, the 80/20 rule. If you look at the numbers, you will discover that 80% of your Revenue comes from 20% of your client ..read more

Do you need to reinvent your business? Do you need to reinvent yourself as a leader? Well, being the start of a brand new year, it’s the perfect time for a deeper look into your business, your team and yourself.
Let’s Start with Your Business
With all the advances in technology, emerging economies, artificial intelligence, economic uncertainty, and geo-political events (just to name a few), every business on the planet should be looking at what they need to do to survive, let alone thrive going forward.
Business as usual (BAU) is not going to cut it anymore.
Just look at some of th ..read more

The world continues to spin faster. Fear, uncertainty, and doubt continue to be top of mind for virtually everyone (FUD as I call it). And to make things worse, competitors are getting very aggressive at poaching talent, and senior talent is retiring in record numbers. We knew this was coming. 20-years ago, Management Consultants were ringing the alarm saying that Baby Boomers held most of the big jobs and they would be gone soon. But… most business leaders that I know didn’t do anything about it and now they are in panic mode – especially if they have a highly sk ..read more

I am getting tons of questions lately around: “How do I make my people accountable to deliver on their objectives?” Leaders will often add something along the lines of, “since COVID, nobody seems to care about the business anymore.” While the latter is a topic for another day, it kind of ties into accountability from the perspective of team members being burnt out and fatigued by what they have gone through in the last three years.
But this is about driving accountability.
First of all, people have not stopped caring about doing good work, or caring about how they contribute to the succe ..read more

Are you ever too old to learn new leadership tips? Too young?
When I was out walking with my Border Collie, I was thinking about what I learned thus far in 2023. The further I walked, the more I realized that the list of new ideas that I have discovered or learned from others in 2023 is long.
I was also thinking about the leaders that I am blessed to work with on a daily basis in my practice. What have they taught me? What observations did I have about leaders that I came across that struggle in leading their teams or their business?
Important Leadership Lessons

Ever thought about what is most important in your world? In business, leaders often don’t spend too much time thinking about what is truly important. We talk about ‘Killer Strategies’ and ‘BHAG’s (Big Hairy Audacious Goals). We talk about shareholder value generation, productivity, customer satisfaction and cost control. I know because I talk about it on a regular basis.
What we don’t often talk or obsess about though is what is the long game we are playing? How are we going to create something that lasts beyond us. We don’t spend time thinking about the val ..read more

I have some additional thoughts I want to share on increasing the speed of leadership, (read part 1 here). This time I want to explore the list of attributes that learning leaders (like yourself) should focus on getting better at, because that is the next natural question that I get.
So let’s get to it. Here is my list of special ‘Speed of Leadership’ skills that I recommend:
Develop a ‘World View.’ The world is crazy fast and getting faster and more complicated. ‘Speed of Leaders’ leaders need to have a view of things outside the day-to-day and into the future. Myopically focusin ..read more

I love working with leaders that want to be better today than they were yesterday – it is truly is an honor to work with mindsets that embrace learning and change.
Learning Leaders
These days the questions of ‘Learning Leaders’ are:
A.I. – should I be worried?
How is Hybrid working going to evolve?
How do I attract talent that is a ‘fit’ and will stay?
What is the best approach to mental health support?
How do I create a sense of belonging on my team?
How ‘fast’ should my team, my business and I be moving?
All good questions! It is number six from above that I want to talk about today ..read more
