“Dear Chris …I want to postpone our first session and my LPI until the autumn. I have not really had the chance to do much leadership recently, due to COVID …” I received this email from a new coaching client last week. It left me a little stunned. Unable to think of anything skilful to write, I decided to pick up the phone and talk it through with her. There was of course a really lucid explanation as to why this very intelligent, affable company director had felt her leadership had been hindered by Zoom meetings, pandemic restrictions, family needs and urgent business situations. Virtual Leadership – Lessons Learned?
Quest Leadership Blog
by Chris Nel

I’ll focus on the three most frequently cited families of concerns and split this into what people reported, learned and what advice would they give others to improve their virtual leadership …  What people reported. It’s fair to say most of us have found leadership over the last six months to be a challenge. Some leaders have thrived on it and some have found it a bit more of a struggle. We can learn from all of them. The main topics of conversation on both our free helpline (still open 07776 230 198)  and in response to our posts have fallen (when forced a little bit!) Into three b ..read more

THE GOOD Human kindness has been for me, the big winner. It has been the real upside of my experience of the COVID-19 lockdown. I have experienced so much more human kindness than has been normal for me. The surge in volunteering, calling friends and relations, donating, running family zoom quizzes, virtual dinner parties,  watching out for each other or just a bit more friendly neighbourhood banter. Why is that?  I believe that the existential threat posed by COVID-19 has revealed to all but the most insensitive, our very real need for and dependency on each other. As we have ..read more

Quest Leadership Blog

It is in a crisis that we need our leaders most. Paradoxically, it is also in a crisis that people who should be providing leadership get stuck in ‘managing the situation’. These are our reflections after 6 weeks of running our free COVID19 Leadership Helpline. This week we are most thoughtful about how difficult It is to achieve the right balance between management and leadership in lockdown. Lesson 1. It’s about balance. Management and Leadership work in opposition to each other. One is about the control of the organisation. The other is about inspiring people to want to contribute to the pe ..read more

Getting Better at ‘Change’ !
Quest Leadership Blog

I used to work with Tom Peters, the business guru and author of more than 20 books on business excellence. My job then was to help the people implement the ideas Tom wrote and spoke about. In many ways, it still is … What I learned was that ‘change’ is not a process. It is a culture. Human beings are naturally adaptive … But, the environment has to be conducive. We have to want to adapt. Not be told to, or expected to, or paid to, or coerced in any way. We have to really crave change. In a business context therefore, successful adaptation is the consequence of inspiring leadership not desperat ..read more

The summer break can mean relaxing in the sun (weather permitting), a staycation (complete with DIY), or a full-blown globe-trotting adventure. However you choose to enjoy yourself, this is also a good time for reflection on the year so far. Perhaps your thoughts are drifting to challenges like: Maintaining momentum in the face of the UK economic slowdown Achieving bigger goals, doing more with less resource Securing advantage in an increasingly competitive marketplace Where’s the invisible supercharger that helps you achieve this? One that’s available to every single organisation on Earth? Si ..read more

Enabling Others to Act: Collaboration culture for your team
Quest Leadership Blog

An organisation’s success never rests on one set of shoulders; P.T. Barnum wouldn’t have lasted long on the trapeze. Leaders set the tone for their environment and have faith that others can do their bit. Do you want a space where people cling to their comfort zones, never thinking above their pay grade? Or do you want a team united by common purpose, with everyone empowered to contribute to the mission? We prefer that second one; we prefer Enabling Others to Act, one of the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership outlined in The Leadership Challenge. But it doesn’t happen by itself. The trial ..read more

Challenge the process: Shaking up the status quo
Quest Leadership Blog
by David Pilbeam

The best leaders have the courage to discard the obsolete. But that doesn’t make them wrecking balls who go about trying to fix what isn’t broken. Exemplary leadership walks a thin line, shaking things up to create order from the chaos surrounding us. We call this Challenging the Process, one of the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership outlined in James Kouzes and Barry Posner’s book, The Leadership Challenge. Here, we’re examining how to make this work in practice, and how rocking the boat can make for smooth sailing in the long run. The search for opportunity Stagnation is death for a busi ..read more
