Leaving Windows :-( but still a MS Fan

So, after 30+ years of being a Windows fan-boy, I'm jumping ship. I'm going to live in the MacOS and Linux worlds only, if it works for me. I still love a lot of Microsoft services so my contacts, calendar, e-mail, storage, et c. remain in the Microsoft ecosystem. But, sadly and disappointedly, Windows has become a mess. I've been wishing for years they could standardise the UI. I don't care to what, I would just like it to be the same for 100% of the OS. If Linux can do this, why, with all their resources, can't Microsoft? And now, advertisements are coming to the Start Menu. We can turn the ..read more

Quick question about the v86 mode used in the NTVDM

I don't know how to phrase this 100%, so bear with me. I know that NTVDM uses v86 mode to run DOS programs on 32 bit versions of Windows NT. But what I am wondering is v86 mode also used to run Windows 3.1 programs too? Or are these just executed a little more natively? submitted by /u/c64z86 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

My Windows laptop was stolen recently with no way to track it. It was paired with my phone's Link to Windows feature. This morning before I left home the 'Link to Windows' notification appeared on my phone saying that it was connected to my laptop. I just want to make sure this is a bug and the thief is not my neighbor or something. submitted by /u/safelyvulnerable [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Windows NTFS file and folder ownership bypass?
Reddit » Windows

If I plug in an NTFS drive in to a Mac and browse user folders, there's no need nor prompt to administer new ownership/permissions to the subfolders and their contents. If I do it on a Windows machine it 'has' to do this. Is there no way of bypassing this in any way? submitted by /u/Inevitable-Sherbert [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

How Do I change my Windows display language if my license only accepts 1 preferred language

Hi guys My new laptop came with a pre-installed windows which was also pre-set for Portuguese since I am in Brazil. I need it changed into English. I`ve gone onto settings - language and time, and tried to click on Language of Windows display, which is set as Portuguese and it doesn`t allow me to change into English. That small box over where it reads Portuguese Brazil, when I click on it, it doesn`t roll down opening an option to switch to English. Not sure what to do. As you can see, English is indeed set as my preferred language already. Yellow warning says? Your license only allows on ..read more
