As the European Parliament elections approach, a growing sense of fear stemming from multiple — yet mutually reinforcing — sources seems to be the decisive force shaping electoral behaviour. Citizens of the EU experience uncertainty in the face of broad economic and cultural changes occurring at an unprecedented pace, coupled by unforeseen crises, such as Covid and the climate crisis, and the re-emergence of war conflicts, on a continent accustomed to peace for over half a century. The survey Last month, more than 10,800 European voters took a stand on the pressing issues and running challenge ..read more

Hello and welcome to Europe 101, your handy guide to politics across the Atlantic Ocean. We know you have a lot on your mind. A judge has found your former president guilty on 34 felony charges. Your current president isn’t totally sure what year it is. And these two paragons of democracy are gearing up for a clash of the titans in November, which understandably is sucking up all the oxygen on planet Earth.  But how about some pre-game entertainment? Because Europe is also having an election. Remember World II? And World War I for that matter? Both of those wars started in Europe, where i ..read more

POLITICO Europe

LONDON — In the space of an hour, Rishi Sunak’s fragile hopes for salvaging his party’s fortunes in the U.K. general election came crashing down around him.  Nigel Farage, the Conservatives’ perennial nemesis, summoned journalists Monday for an “emergency” press conference at which he announced he was reversing his earlier pledge to stay out of the general election and would be standing for parliament after all.  The decision threatens not just Sunak’s prospects in the election the prime minister called for July 4, but also the very survival of the Conservative Party, until now one o ..read more

VÕRU, Estonia — The signs of a creeping militarization are easy to detect.  In this small town 23 miles from the European Union’s border with Russia, trucks painted army green trundle over the cobbles of the main street. In a bar near the central square, off-duty U.S. servicemen watch basketball and soccer on dueling TV screens. Across a placid lake, a patch of forest is being cleared for the expansion of a military training area. “When the training ground is operating, you know about it,” said Kratmar Muursepp, a waiter working the counter at the central Mantelahi Cafe. “It’s all boom, b ..read more

U.S. President Joe Biden will not attend the upcoming Ukraine Peace Summit in Switzerland, a decision that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has described as a gift to Russia. Instead, Vice President Kamala Harris and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan will represent the U.S. during the two-day event in Lucerne starting June 15, the White House said in a statement Monday. Belgian far-right MEP wins case against Meta over shadowban
POLITICO Europe
by Pieter Haeck

A Belgian judge has ordered Meta to pay more than €27,000 in damages to a Belgian far-right MEP. Meta had imposed a “shadowban,” which lowers a user’s organic reach on their platforms, on the page of Tom Vandendriessche, MEP for the Belgian far-right party Vlaams Belang, in February 2021. A Belgian judge ruled on Monday, however, that in imposing the shadowban Meta had not acted “in good faith” regarding its agreements. It also said that users had “insufficient procedural guarantees” when Meta imposed such measures. Meta’s decision also violated the EU’s data protection regime, the GDPR. “A fi ..read more
