Hey friends,  Please enjoy this month’s guest article by Stefanie Michele– who you can find online here, or on Instagram here– below! <3 Jessi Kneeland I’m Afraid to Pass On My Body Image Issues to My Kids, by Stefanie Michele I used to think that when I had children, my body image issues would fade. Being responsible for raising other humans felt like a big enough reason to finally “get over” my insecurities and focus on more important things. But there I was, after the birth of my third daughter, still comparing my body to other women’s bodies in the school pick ..read more

Femcels

I recently read a fascinating article about femcels. If you’re curious, you can read the article here, but for now all you really need to know is that a femcel is a female incel, and an incel is someone who is involuntarily celibate, because they are unable to attract sexual/romantic partners. I had heard plenty about incels and incel culture before– they’re an online community made up mostly of young misogynists who feel entitled to sex, and are angry at all women for being so “shallow” that they only have sex with conventionally attractive men– but never f ..read more

Sinking into joy…

Hey friends, Lately I’ve been sinking into the gentle pleasure and joy of fiction. This is the result of a very exciting conversation I recently had with my book agent. We were chatting about the next steps for my book on body neutrality, when she mentioned that now would be a good time to start thinking about the next book I want to write. We bounced around some ideas very briefly: what did I have to cut from this book? What do I feel needs to be fleshed out more fully? What peripheral topics around body liberation still need to be addressed? I hadn’t even realized I could pit ..read more

Hellooo and happy Tuesday! After a few weeks off from podcasting and YouTubing to recover from writing my book, I’ve gotten back in the saddle– and I’m really excited to share what I’ve made with you! First of all: A bunch of y’all seemed to really like last month’s video series on the 5 common characteristics of the High Achiever Body Image Avatar, so I’m continuing on to another avatar! (And if you’re not familiar with the four Body Image Avatars, you can find a free overview video on them here, and if you want to go more in depth, The Avatar Guide is ..read more

Hey friends, My book manuscript is handed in, and I’m officially in recovery! People keep asking me… how do I feel?!? And the weird thing is that, normally, I’d have an answer for that. Normally, I know exactly what I’m feeling, and I can share the details of my own processing, with clarity and details. Normally, I’d already be crafting the experience of the last nine months into a story. This is how my brain normally works: I’m forever crafting the story of my life, and weaving my experiences into the fabric of my identity, in my own mind. I think it’s a writer thing, but I’ve always ..read more

Hey everyone,  Please enjoy this month’s guest article by Stefanie Bonastia, below! Big hug,  Jessi Kneeland Exercise and I didn’t start out as friends. As a child, I’d never really been a natural athlete and had no template for exercise as anything other than a means to losing weight. My relationship to it ranged from resistant to obligatory to obsessive, depending on where on the disordered eating spectrum I fell at any given time. “Joyful” was not terminology that made sense to me when it came to movement. During my 30’s, I was in another co-dependent relationship with exerc ..read more

Hey friends, I’m totally wrecked right now. Writing a book started out as exciting, and then it got interesting and challenging. Right now, with less than two weeks to hand in my manuscript, it’s BRUTAL. The endless mental labor, the physical toll it’s taking on my body, the emotional toll it’s taking on my life and relationships. I have to sit down and write all day, no matter how much my hands and forearms and back ache. I have to sit down and write all day, no matter how tired and in need of a break I am. I have to sit and write all day, even when every cell in my body is screaming “NO!” a ..read more

Hey y’all, Today I want to share about the new little video series I’m making for YouTube! Having been so deep in book revisions lately, the Body Image Avatars are all I can think about– so I figured I’d just lean into it and make a bunch of Avatars content for you! Soooo I’m making a 5 part YouTube series on common characteristics/experiences of The High Achiever! Last week I released the first video in the series (which you can find here), about how The High Achiever seeks upward social mobility via their body. In today’s Part #2 video, I explore how The High Achiever tend ..read more

Hi everyone, Please enjoy today’s guest author #TransparentTuesday email, written by Stefanie Bonastia, below! Love, Jessi Kneeland Why Do I Think Other People Look Good in Larger Bodies But I Don’t? Something I’ve noticed in the years that I have been coaching is the evolution of what it means to accept our growing bodies. Two years ago, I worked with a lot of people who had never before considered that it might be okay to gain weight, and who were learning to see fatness as neutral rather than inherently problematic. These days, I’m noticing that more people are coming to coaching sayi ..read more

Fatphobia!

Hi friends, Let’s take today to unpack a big topic: fatphobia. Whether or not you’re familiar with weight stigma or the anti-fat bias, you’re probably aware that our culture celebrates and values thinness, while maligning and disparaging fatness. The reason for this comes down to (untrue) biases people hold, both consciously and subconsciously, about what each kind of body means– and the systems of oppression that create, encourage, and reproduce those biases. In our culture right now, thin/toned bodies tend to be associated with people who are privileged, wealthy, har ..read more
