Weekend Round-up – Limerick and Schools Regatta

Limerick Regatta and the Irish Schools Regatta took place last weekend at O’Briensbridge. The six Limerick clubs hosted 32 clubs and 52 schools over two days, delivering over 200 races in glorious sunshine. Many of the young rowers got their first taste of regatta rowing on Saturday, with huge cheers of support for the U13 Octuplets, giving us some fantastic races along with the U14 quads too. Limerick Regatta Committee will host both the Limerick Regatta and the Schools Regatta this weekend at O’Briensbridge, Co. Clare. The regatta committee wants to make attendees aware that there is very limited parking available at the venue and in the local area. Spectators and athletes are advised to carpool and to get dropped off and picked up at the venue where possible. Declarations are now open and will close at 7 pm tonight. Last week, the participants of the Women in Coaching Pathway took part in a co-coaching session with Rowing Ireland’s high-performance coaches at the National Rowing Centre. Two medals are coming home to Ireland as racing finishes up here on Lago di Varese. Fiona Murtagh and Airfic Keogh are taking home the silver medals for the Women’s Pair. The sun continues to shine on Lago di Varese after the few miserable days in the lead up to racing. Day two finishes up in Italy, and we’ll see four crews from Ireland race for medals tomorrow in the A Finals. As a consequence of hosting the Schools Regatta this year, Limerick Regatta has had an unprecedentedly large entry. Initial timetabling resulted in racing commencing at 9:00 and finishing at 1:00 the following morning. As a result, the Committee have had to consider how to reduce the regatta to a manageable length.
