Wow, it’s nearly the end of 2023 and what a year! Thanks to all my subscribers and readers for your continued support especially this year when I have been posting less as I finished my PhD. After working on the PhD thesis for 6 1/2 years I submitted on November 28 – 103,000 words, 438 pages and 1530 citations! My deepest gratitude to all the amazing photojournalists and industry folk who participated and supported me on this extraordinary journey. And to my friends who stuck by me when I was buried by books and disappeared for months on end. Looking forward to being back in the world and post ..read more

For those of us in the Southern Hemisphere, spring is here, and the air is filled with the fragrance of blossoms, in particular magnolias and jasmine. Such a beautiful time of the year, and welcomed after a long, and for Melbourne, an unusually cold winter. This week on Photojournalism Now: Friday Round Up my thoughts on the latest iteration of the Ballarat International Foto Biennale (in regional Victoria) which opened on 26 August and runs until 22 October. Ballarat International Foto Biennale 2023 This year marks the tenth iteration of the Ballarat International Foto Biennale (BIFB) which b ..read more

In the past month I’ve spent time in Tasmania working on the final draft of my PhD – the end is near. I have a deep affinity with this Australian state, its majestic natural beauty, the freshest of air and friendly locals. While I was there I met some of the protestors who are fighting to save the takayna/Tarkine forest, one of the true natural wonders of the world. Earlier this year I’d been in the forest and stayed at Corinna Wilderness, a truly uplifting and life affirming experience. In reflecting on being back in ‘Tassie,’ I remembered I’d written an article on Tasmanian photographer and ..read more

This week on Photojournalism Now: Friday Round Up the Auckland Festival of Photography celebrates its 20th anniversary with the theme of resistance [ātete]. Event Auckland Festival of Photography It is remarkable that the Auckland Festival of Photography (AFP) has been around for two decades, a feat to be celebrated given the tenuous nature of arts events whose very existence is reliant on inconsistent funding from various sources and the whims of audiences. Julia Durkin the festival’s founder and CEO as been at the helm for the duration, and there is no sign that her energy and enthusiasm for ..read more

There is a constant rhythm to this year – blink and the month is gone! Today on Photojournalism Now: Friday Round Up Prestel’s re-issue of Anders Petersen’s iconic book, Café Lehmitz, slows the pace taking us back to the 1960s. Also, Head On Photo Festival goes up again this year in November in Sydney. Work has begun on the selection of the featured programme. I am once again delighted to be included on the selection panel and marvel at the breadth of work submitted. Photographers and photo artists around the world continue to bend and mould the medium to create original narratives that span t ..read more
