(The Hill) -- Weather forecasters at the University of Pennsylvania predicted a record hurricane season for 2024 on Thursday, a “hyperactive” season that could threaten the Gulf Coast.
The UPenn forecast predicts between 27-39 named tropical storms, with the best estimate of 33 storms, the most of any forecast in the 15-year history of the project. An average season usually has about half that number.

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Cardell Hayes, the man who was found guilty of manslaughter in the killing of former New Orleans Saints player Will Smith, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison with credit for time served.
Hayes' retrial began earlier this year, on Monday, Jan. 22.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The man who fatally shot retired NFL star Will Smith during a confrontation following a car crash in 2016 is scheduled for sentencing Thursday in a New Orleans courtroom.

NEW YORK (AP) — New York’s highest court on Thursday overturned Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction, finding the judge at the landmark #MeToo trial prejudiced the ex-movie mogul with “egregious” improper rulings, including a decision to let women testify about allegations that weren’t part of the case.

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans Police Department announced Thursday, April 25 that an arrest was made in a fatal Algiers shooting.
According to officers, they arrested 32-year-old Nayiondra A. Woolridge in connection to a shooting in the 300 block of Ptolemy Street that left 25-year-old Brittany Ussin dead.
On April 22, NOPD officers responded to a call of a shooting in the area around 7:03 p.m. Upon arrival, officers said a woman, Ussin, was found suffering from a gunshot wound.
