During the Renaissance, landscapes were actually used to convey stories. This can be seen in works like “The Tribute Money” by Massacio, a fresco depicting a linear story within the Bible, more specifically, from the book of Matthew. It tells the story of Jesus and his 12 Disciples needing to pay a Roman Tax collector. Penniless, Jesus’ Disciples are distressed, only for Jesus to have one of his Disciples catch a fish that, surprisingly, had within its mouth the money needed to pay the guard. It’s less than a month until Maryland Federation of Art’s Paint Annapolis event begins and what better way to prep than make a whole blog post talking about it? I actually began working here at MFA during Paint Annapolis and it was honestly the best way to start.
