Reupholstering vs. Buying New

It’s always a subject that seems up for debate. Is it better to reupholster your furniture or buy new?  I shared this vintage chair and ottoman set that I found at a consignment store for $300 last year. Although the pattern wasn’t exactly what I would’ve chosen, they were bright and cheery and worked with my green kitchen walls. However, we really use our furniture and I quickly realized the fabric wasn’t upholstery weight (it started ripping in multiple spots) and definitely wasn’t meant for our family. Around that time, Ewa from Modern Fabrics reached out to me about working together ..read more

A 2024 Color Trend I Support

I always think the new year trend predictions for interiors are kind of a hoot and never pay much attention to them. But, if these lists hold any weight, I was happy to see that COLOR seems to be on the uptick. According to House Beautiful, bold color–specifically chartreuse–is making a comeback. I know neutral rooms feel safe and noncommittal, but if you love color deep in your heart, life is too short to live in a gray house. Scared to paint a room? Sneak in a pillow, add some colorful taper candles or grab a quart of paint and change up a small piece of furniture. It’s an instant energizer ..read more

I’ve been burning this wintry scent. These blue bags for gift storage. Solar outdoor orbs that I used on our front steps this Christmas. This hanging mirror. (Comes in two shapes.) Highly recommend these inexpensive sheet sets. My favorite blazer is now under $35 and available in more colors.  A travel jewelry pouch. A festive blouse. And soft pajama sets. (Still time to monogram for Christmas.) Favorite ..read more

There’s always pajamas or slippers, but if you’ve exhausted most of those possibilities, I’ve put together a short list of things that make home a happier place to be. I either have (and love) or wouldn’t mind receiving any of these gifts. Hopefully, someone on your list might feel the same. JavaScript is currently disabled in this browser. 5 Audiobook Memoirs I Recommend

In case you have a long road trip planned for the holidays–or just need something good to listen to around the house–I’m sharing five favorite memoirs that I’ve listened to on audio. I’ve listened to more books this year than ever before and am loving the pace that I can get through them by listening while I’m working out, sitting in car line, folding clothes or making dinner. Once I’m into a book, I can usually listen at 1.75 or 2x speed. Also, I enjoy making a big “to-do” when my kids interrupt me to ask a question by dramatically ripping out one of my AirPods. (They don’t seem bothered.) A ..read more

FILED: An Upper Eastside Classic

This is the home of Lauren McGrath, half of the mother/daughter design firm McGrath II. These photos were originally featured on My Domaine and photographed by Lucas Allen. (I found more photos of this room posted here.) This image has long been stuck in my head, mainly because of those beautiful ceiling-high bookcases and arched doorway. Those things, along with the carved mantel are tough to replicate in most of our homes, so I suggested an arched mirror and a carved console as alternatives below. I really love how the books are the star of the show, with bright white walls and a soft muted ..read more

Hand Painting a Patterned Wall

This project started as many of my more ambitious projects do. I was in my youngest daughter’s room, telling her good night, which led to me staring at her big, blank wall. I suddenly jumped up and started taping off vertical lines and playing around with a design. This is how I began hand painting a patterned wall. If you look closely, you can see that it’s far from perfect. In fact, one of my kids asked “if they were all supposed to look different.” (Ugh.) It’s good to remember when tackling a project like this, you’re going for overall impact–not precision. (It’s also good to regularly rem ..read more

Our Fall Living Room (And Sources)

I recently shared a quick video of our fall(ish) living room on Instagram and am posting a few stills I took on the same day. As usual, fall decorating in our house is very simple, with the extent of it being some cut branches, pillows with texture and a few extra candles. Although a lot of the pieces in my living room are either thrifted or just discontinued, I’ve attempted to put together a source list below. But, my best advice always is to thrift for unique pieces, collect over time and layer, layer, layer. Fabric sofa Sofa is discontinued from OKL, but here’s a similar one that I love. R ..read more
