USA Cycling’s Cyclocross Ranking System: Still Broken?

As we near the 2023 USA Cycling Cyclocross Nationals, the USAC ranking system attracts more scrutiny from athletes concerned about call-up positions and motivated by title hopes. One California race promoter, Clipped in For Life, even held a race series specifically to help West Coast racers get a points boost for a better call-up at Nationals (but largely suffered from poor attendance especially from highly-ranked racers). Before our last Nationals in Louisville back in 2018, math professor Jim Cochran wrote about problems with the USA Cycling rankings that positively impacted some riders an ..read more

One of the most unique races we attended last season was the inaugural Nutty Cross. The race featured a serpentine course that weaved through walnut trees and brought racers right alongside the Ruhstaller brewery, which was packed with fans and unexpecting patrons. The race ended with a relay race that included fresh beverages. Chris, the race promoter, also did his part to grow the sport, offering free racing for first-timers, and received free promotion from CXM, our promoter special. Nutty Cross returns this Saturday, November 18, for its second edition, and promises to be better than ever ..read more

The event known as the Single Speed Cyclocross World Championships (SSCXWC) continues its life in infamy this weekend in Santa Cruz, California. Cyclocross Magazine was at the very first one in 2007 outside Portland, and we’re amazed the event has continued and even grown, despite traumatic brain injuries, tattoo scandals, GOATs racing under fake names, several iterations uncomfortably close to both the UCI headquarters and the cyclocross motherland, and a tragic pandemic. One-gear cyclocrossers from around the world will converge in Santa Cruz to contest feats of strength on Saturday, in hop ..read more

The 2023-2024 UCI Cyclocross World Cup season kicks off this Sunday, October 15, with the World Cup Waterloo in the backyard of Trek Bikes. This year, the World Cup starts with just one American World Cup, but that hasn’t stopped many of the world’s top racers from making the trip. Gone are Fayetteville and Jingle Cross from years past. The start list includes 35 Elite Women, the same number as in 2022, but will be missing the late rising star Zoe Clay, who tragically passed away just a week before the World Cup kick-off. American Champion Clara Honsinger leads Aniek Van Alphen and Fem Van E ..read more

While the “Spirit of Gravel” is touted as making offroad cycling accessible and welcoming to many, racers with time and budget constraints can be forgiven for feeling like gravel races are anything but accessible. Add together entry fees in the hundreds of dollars, events selling out months in advance, and the races often far enough from civilization that they need an overnight stay and a weekend away, and it starts to add up to an expensive sport that is impossible for many of us to do every weekend. Our favorite discipline of cyclocross (aka “shorttrackgravel”) looks to be a lot more welcom ..read more

Ridden and Reviewed: Bombtrack Tension C Cyclocross Race Bike

Bombtrack Tension C. © C.Lee/ Cyclocross Magazine Cyclocross season is now upon us! Yet compared to five years ago, there are few dedicated cyclocross bikes in the United States, partly due to the high popularity of gravel cycling and the bikes being relatively similar. Gravel bikes evolved from cyclocross bikes to adapt to the needs of the long events. So while you can race cyclocross on a gravel bike, the cyclocross bike is a different steed. The true ‘cross machine is for the fast, sinewy courses with significantly varying terrain and conditions that define cyclocross. Last year we revie ..read more
