Your Managers Think They’re Doing Great. Employees Disagree

Everyone says people don’t leave jobs; they leave managers. And yet, managers don’t get the feedback they need to improve, according to a new survey from Gallup. As a result, many think they’re doing a better job than they actually are. Here’s what you need to know–and what you can do about it. Managers and employees don’t see eye-to-eye Gallup found a disconnect across the board between manager self-perception and employee sentiment: Manager responsiveness “72 percent of managers say they respond to messages and calls within 24 hours.” “51 percent o ..read more

Someone Made a TikTok Attacking My Article on Hush Travel. Here’s How I Responded
Evil HR Lady
by Evil HR Lady

Hush travel is quite controversial. Remote workers want to travel and work where the WiFi is. Managers and HR want to know where employees are and forbid employees from working in places where the business could get in legal trouble. So it was no surprise that my recent article “It’s Time to Make ‘Hush Trips’ a Fireable Offense” ruffled a few feathers. But when popular management TikTokker Robyn L. Garrett came out fighting, I knew I had to act. She accused me of “propaganda” — on behalf of whom, I’m not sure. The secret corporate overlords who fund my private jet ..read more

Non-Competes in Limbo: What Recruiters Should Watch For
Evil HR Lady
by Evil HR Lady

The FCC recently announced the end of non-competes for all employees. Now, the chances of this going through are pretty slim. The US Chamber of Commerce filed a lawsuit in Texas less than 24 hours after the announcement, and while we won’t have the outcome of that lawsuit for a long time, it’s doubtful that the result will be a complete ban on non-compete agreements. Regardless, the FCC’s ruling brings about a shift in the world of non-competes, especially in hiring. While most of the focus has been on how this affects individuals, recruiters are the biggest group affected by this change. Afte ..read more

North Carolina Wants to Make a Big Change to Mask Rules. What It Might Mean for You

Mask bans are nothing new. Georgia, for instance, banned masks in 1951 to prevent Ku Klux Klan members from covering their faces in public, a law the Georgia Supreme Court upheld in 1990. North Carolina passed a similar law in 1953, which banned masks but allowed exceptions for things like Halloween costumes and, as of 2020, health concerns. However, that looks like it is about to end. The North Carolina Senate recently passed a bill 30-15, along party lines, that would end allowances for public mask-wearing for health reasons. The bill is currently before ..read more

Upgrade FLSA: legislation vs free market in employment

The Department of Labor is upgrading the minimum salary for exempt employees from $684 per week ($35,568 per year) to $844 per week ($43,888 per year) as of July 1, 2024, and then to $1,128 per week ($58,656 per year) as of January 1, 2025. The idea is that this minimum salary should be tied to the economic reality. And that makes at least a little sense. But, let’s face it, the FLSA makes little sense in 2024. Congress first passed this law in 1938, and they have amended it from time to time, but it remains substantially the same. In a nutshell, it divides employees into two classes: exempt a ..read more

Do Reference Checks Really Matter?
Evil HR Lady
by Evil HR Lady

Reference checks matter more than interviews. The purpose of the interview is to make you a better reference checker. The ideal reference check should take at least 45 minutes. These are some of the many things Graham Duncan, investor and chairman of the Sohn Conference Foundation and chairman emeritus of East Rock Capital LLC, thinks about reference checks for job candidates. Venture capitalist Ben Casnocha recently summarized his discussion with Duncan in a LinkedIn post. I have no doubt that Duncan’s method of reference-c ..read more

I’m So Incredibly Embarrassed
Evil HR Lady

On the same day, I got two messages asking the same question: “I did something embarrassing. Did I just ruin my life?” The funny thing is that one was a LinkedIn coaching client, and the other was an improv student. Neither one of them ruined their lives. In fact, the only people who thought they had done anything embarrassing were themselves. Was what they had done ideal? No. Did anyone but them remember? Also no. But I remember every embarrassing thing I’ve ever done… Okay, that’s not true. Surely, I’ve forgotten some of them. But stupid things I said or did often come to mind, and I cringe ..read more

Elon Musk Just Punctuated Tesla Layoffs With Another Tactic: A Hiring Freeze

Tesla has been laying people off. And in true Elon Musk fashion, it’s garnering news attention for the bad aspects of it. Like this email informing people that Tesla could not offer reasonable accommodations for their disabilities, or this story about an employee who slept in the Tesla parking lot. But Tesla appears to have done something a bit quieter that also has an impact on employees: a hiring freeze. Tesla’s hiring freeze As of this writing on Friday, only three jobs are posted on Tesla’s job board. For a company with well over 100,000 em ..read more
