Monday, April 22 is Earth Day! Did you know that shea butter has a negative carbon footprint? That’s right. Shea forests, which exist for 200 to 300 years, help suck carbon out of the atmosphere. The website TreeHugger explains; “Shea has an enormous potential to mitigate climate change in West Africa… Relative to production volumes, every ton of shea kernels produced has a negative carbon footprint of 1.04 tonnes of CO2.” Amazing. To celebrate Earth Day we’re having a 30% OFF sale that ends Wednesday, April 24 at midnight EST. Enter code EARTHDAY30 at checkout.&n ..read more

If you’re a fan of BGLH chances are that, like me, you love a good pampering and bodycare routine. My routine helps me feel confident and maintain a natural glow. Here’s what I do. Step 1: It’s all about intention. I treat my bathroom like a personal spa. This means that the environment is neat, orderly and smelling good. I like to run a diffuser while I shower and light a candle if I’m taking a bath. Once my personal spa is looking and smelling good, I get the water running. Step 2: I take the first few moments of my shower to relax. I let the water run on me while ta ..read more

Is it really ‘natural’? That’s the question at the heart of a new class-action lawsuit against Procter & Gamble, makers of Herbal Essence and Pantene. At issue is how P&G markets Herbal Essence and Pantene products as being 97% ‘naturally-derived’.  Johnson & Johnson is also being sued over deceptive marketing. Their Neutrogena T/Sal Shampoo is labeled as ‘preservative-free’, even though citric acid is used as a preservative. Meanwhile, Revlon is facing litigation over the possibility of ammonia in its ‘ammonia-free’ Creme of Nature Moisture-Rich Hair Color with Shea Butt ..read more

I wrote recently about getting back into a workout routine to stay trim as I approach 40. My body is sore and my spirit is weak, but I’m hanging in there! (Just kidding, it’s not that bad, lol.) One of the benefits of gym-going, that I’d forgotten, is the ability to do research in the locker room. Observing what products women are using to moisturize and soften their skin.  One thing I’ve noticed is our Sandalwood & Bergamot Body Oil is always amongst the most fragrant moisturizers in the locker room. Any time I press down the pump and start slathering, curious and ..read more

Did you know that April is International Black Women’s History Month? Yes, it’s true! It was started by Atlanta native Sha Battle in 2016 and is quickly gaining in recognition and popularity. BGLH Marketplace has a very diverse customer base, both culture and gender wise (hey fellas!), but this brand was born out of the online black beauty world in the late 2000s. At the time, black women were blogging in unprecedented numbers about haircare and skincare. Many businesses were launched in that time (including this one!) that refined the DIY beauty recipes being shared, and introduced them to a ..read more

We got this incredible review from travel nurse Kristi who was desperate to ease her infant’s irritated skin and turned to our butters as a last resort; “I have a 5 month old baby with horribly sensitive skin. We can only use specific diapers and wipes. Oatmeal baths because Johnson & Johnson is too harsh for his skin. We tried all the diaper creams. Nothing really works. Vaseline helps better then the store cream. I’m a travel nurse. I have used hospital grade wound care products, even medihoney, and they would bring it down to a mild rash. One day out of desperation I decided t ..read more

Changing my eating habits, exercise routine, and body products have all helped in reducing my eczema. Also, seeing a dermatologist has helped tremendously. Getting a regimen that is tailored to my skin has helped me understand and heal my skin. Recently, I noticed that my eczema was starting to flare up above my lip. This has always been a very sensitive area for my skin and an area where I’ve had eczema scars. After some reflection, I figured that my skin was changing due to the weather. In Atlanta, it is finally starting to get warmer, although we still have our cooler days. I noticed that t ..read more
