A better line, a better embroidery

The line, the line, the line. As a designer I'm always in the look for new ways to create or improve processes so it hasn't escaped me that a nice clean line is one the best secrets to get almost perfect results in embroidery. A traced line that wiggles on the fabric or that is too wide to know where to prick your needle is like a tiny bandit playing pranks on you, making it hard to stitch as you'd like to. So to keep these villain lines at bay I have the habit now of using templates for transferring almost all of my designs to fabric. The same thing happens with cutting felt shapes for appl ..read more

«We don’t talk enough about the upside of 2020. Stillness. Value of time. Purpose. Exposure. Identity. Vision. Truth. Patience. Returning. Love...»* This is the year I'm graduating with honors from Patience School. I started learning Patience years ago —and I'm not talking craft. I learned to wait and believe that “the day" would come. That day arrived and I could finally move to my new home in Chicago (many of you were witness to that long wait). Now, 2020 is the year I wait and believe in the day I will heal my neck and back. I embroidered this Threads of Affirmation postcard to remind me ..read more

Coming back to embroidering
Karen Barbé

My blog was silent for a whole year. My Instagram account didn't see any posting for almost seven months. I missed many comments and messages. The ugly reason: I've been struggling with chronic neck pain for years—too much embroidering? Poor posture? Probably... These last months have been really rough and painful for me. I couldn't do much, even making the bed or trying to open a bottom drawer would hurt. Physical therapy and medication have put me back together so I'm able to sit down and embroider again. So the image of this new embroidery is a victory, a celebration, though I still have a ..read more

Relax and recharge. If you embroider regularly, you already know the joyful sensations that making things by hand bring to your heart and body: the sound of the needle piercing the taut fabric or paper, the softness of the floss on your fingers, the thread colors playing cheerfully between them. All small details but so capable of transforming our well-being in a few moments. Drawing on this experience Joone Creative, Fifi Buchanan and I set out to create Threads of Affirmation, a project that facilitates active meditation through embroidery. Threads of Affirmation are embroidery kits th ..read more

Colour Confident | Palette Nº4

I always get a strange, tingling sensation during this time of the year. It feels like part nostalgia for the season that's leaving and part excitement for the new season arriving. I love how colors fire up in autumn. The angle of the sun and its softer rays, the leaves in warmer tones, the crispier mornings and nights, all the cups of tea I drink during the day. This palette brings the cozy mood of autumn without being overly warm. The fresh hints of lemon yellow and turquoise infuse a invigorating sensation to the mix. Where would you use it?
