My autobiography will be published on November 12th, sixteen months after I shook hands with my editor, at The Orcadian. It’s available from my website shop: https://williamsichel.co.uk/shop/ My story covers my early childhood in Welford, Warwickshire, my move to the southeast of England for my teenage years and the subsequent development of a passion for sport which has never subsided. My first love was table tennis which I pursued with an uncharacteristic enthusiasm resulting in extensive training trips to Japan, China and finally Holland. Although achieving international status for Scotlan ..read more

At a little after 2am on Monday 22nd April I arrived back at Inverness Castle having run the complete North Coast 500 mile route in 8 days 19 hours 8 minutes and 8 seconds. Having experienced difficulties with my feet in the early days of my running I thought I would write about how I prepared for this event with specific reference to my footwear.  I’ve worn Freet for all my running and everyday activities since 2016, so I have a history with these shoes now. My main concerns going into this run were the possible implications of the harsh environment. The wear and tear on my fee ..read more

Freet minimalist footwear at the World’s longest race 2018 With this year’s edition of this remarkable event kicking off in a week’s time, I wanted to write in a bit more detail about my experiences last year wearing Freet footwear at the world’s longest certified footrace – the Sri Chinmoy 3100 mile race – 5649 laps around a city block in Queens, New York. This was my second attempt at the race having successfully completed the full distance, well within the 52 day cut-off, in 2014. My history with barefoot shoes is that I have long experience of finding it difficult to find shoes that fit pr ..read more

Using dried meals when travelling and racing
William Sichel

Using dried meals when travelling and racing I have been travelling for my ultra distance running races since 1994.  In 2016 I notched up my 100th ultra and visited 21 countries in the process.  I specialise in road and running track ultras, not the trail and mountain races that have become so popular now. The locations aren’t so spectacular but the experiences can be just as deep and meaningful. I try to make mistakes only once and I have made mistakes with food when travelling and I know how much it can spoil your performance, after having put so much into your preparations.  ..read more
