Yesterday, local government workers, who have been bargaining with the Cariboo Regional District (CRD) since January, blocked the Regional District's attempts to ram through a deal that would have threatened the workers' financial security and risked exacerbating recruitment and retention issues.

Seniors will soon have access to 36 affordable homes in Williams Lake as construction begins on Glen Arbor Phase II.
“Seniors in Williams Lake want the option to live independently, but for those with low or moderate incomes, global inflation and a housing shortage can make it challenging to find an affordable place to live,” said the Hon. BCGEU employees voted against accepting the Cariboo Regional District’s (CRD) last contract offer to avert a strike. As a result of this vote, there is no definite timeline for when BCGEU’s strike action will cease. BCGEU may also choose to initiate disruptive job action as part of the collective bargaining process.

Work has begun in B.C.’s southern Interior to upgrade 482 kilometres of highways and side roads, renewing driving surfaces for local residents, travellers and the movement of goods.
Approximately 33 kilometres of Highway 97 will be repaved this summer from Tuc el Nuit Road, north of Oliver, northward through the community of Okanagan Falls to White Lake Road, along with area side roads. Peter Bros Construction Ltd. has been awarded an $8.9-million contract to deliver this project. Work is expected to be complete by October 2024.

The Cariboo Regional District (CRD) is providing further information about the direct service delivery impacts from BCGEU’s strike. BCGEU may initiate strike action beginning on Thursday, May 9 at 9:53 a.m., and it is expected that services will be disrupted immediately after that time.
Essential and Contract Services unaffected
The strike will not impact the operation of the CRD’s essential services and contracted services.

The Cariboo Regional District has been informed that the integrated library system (Sitka) of the Cariboo Regional District Library Network was recently impacted by a data breach.
On April 25, 2024, our ILS (integrated library system) provider, the BC Libraries Cooperative, (the Co-op) notified us that they had experienced a security incident. The data breach impacted users of several library networks which use the ILS system, operated by a third-party service provider.
