Jonathan Jasberg did not even own a passport before he was 30; now he can hardly live without one. Travelling with a Leica Q, he has visited over 65 countries, with the aim of capturing images of honest moments and authentic emotions. His pictures speak of the fleetingness of time and of daily life in different worlds. How do you choose the different countries where your pictures were are taken? I shot photos in many different places including Egypt, Nepal, Mexico, India, Japan, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Tunisia…There are a lot of factors that go into the places I chose to travel to next. I tend to ..read more

From the earth, to the rivers, and to the ground water: in the areas in France where uranium was once mined, it will take thousands of years for the natural environment to overcome the past. With a Geiger counter in her hand, Letizia Le Fur moved through radioactively-contaminated parts of the country. Her pictures reveal the dangerous beauty of a nature where the damage perpetrated can often only be recognised by numbers. What is the state of nature today and what does nature mean to you? Today, nature is in a precarious state, bearing the burden of past industrial efforts such as uranium min ..read more

In 2022 and 2023, the Italian photojournalist Ciro Battiloro spent a number of weeks in rugged Normandy. He wanted to document the daily lives of fishermen there – a guild that fights for survival in general every day. In addition to the impressive imagery he returned with from his visits, he acquired an amazing insight: spirituality and handicraft are knotted together like a fishing net. He spoke with us about intimacy whilst taking pictures, rhythmic rituals, a traditional handicraft, and unfavourable weather conditions. Your photography seems to place you in the classical humanistic traditi ..read more

His desire is to freeze and sublimate the present moment in an authentic manner: Aurélien Longo’s pictures speak of a city where the pace is constantly changing throughout the day. As he explores Tokyo, he captures the ever-changing pulse of urban life there. What makes Tokyo so special for you as a photographer, and what fascinates you about street photography? Compared to the various cities I visited across Europe and the United States, visiting Tokyo was certainly the most culturally immersive experience I’ve had to date. As a westerner, being exposed to Japanese culture and lacking the cod ..read more

Todd Hido has been developing his series for over 25 years – series which he prefers to present in book format and at exhibitions. Time and again they capture stories that seem both familiar and unknown, both appealing and unsettling. His style has become unmistakeable: mysterious suburban scenarios; roads and landscapes devoid of people; photographs taken primarily in gloomy weather. On occasion, rare interiors or portraits slip into the flow of images. The photographer captured his motifs predominantly in the USA, not far from where he lives; but his new photo book also took him from the Haw ..read more

Water tells a Tale as it Goes

Without water, there is no life. The statement is as straightforward as the relationship between this vital element and people is complex. Renowned photojournalist Ian Berry has been dealing intensely with the subject of water for the past decades. “Water tells a tale as it goes” is a Japanese saying, which Kathie Webber – journalist and Berry’s wife – uses as the opening words for her accompanying text, adopting this Zen-like wisdom to point out the subtleties of the nature of water. The essential hallmarks of the photographer’s visual language are his intense emotionality and his direct test ..read more

The Malaysian photographer travelled to Peru, in December 2023. This was her first trip to South America. The pictures shown here were taken during a six day journey through the country, in Cusco, Rio Sagrado and deep in the Andes. In our interview, the photographer spoke to us about her approach to her work. She talks about the genius loci concept that inspires her, the focus that propelled her through the country, and the climatic challenges she had to rise to. How do you find your topics, in general? My inspiration primarily stems from the concept of genius loci, an ancient Roman idea initi ..read more

Creative image-maker, engaged photojournalist and poetic storyteller: the current exhibition at the Ernst Leitz Museum is presenting the full scope of Magnum photographer Werner Bischof’s (1916–1954) oeuvre. Despite his early death in a car accident in the Andes, when he was just 38, the precision of his compositions and the emotional aesthetics of his imagery have made Bischof one of the most important Swiss photographers of the 20th century. The selection shows his way from solitary studio photographer to international photojournalist, driven by the magnitude of world events. The exhibition ..read more

Colours offer Greg Mo the chance to get a sense of a place, of an atmosphere. Rather than delivering the usual cliches, Greg Mo want his pictures to surprise. The complex compositions and contrasts are captivating, awakening the senses and the emotions. Your pictures are a riot of colour, what does colour mean to you? Generally speaking, I prefer colour photography, as it gives me more sensations. I am attracted to colours. It’s physical. For me, colours are a way of feeling atmospheres and places. Colour is an essential structure of my compositions; the same images in black and white would no ..read more

The exhibition had long been planned for the opening of the new Leica Gallery in New York, and to mark Elliott Erwitt’s induction into the Leica Hall of Fame. Now the presentation is a posthumous tribute to the people-friendly observer, dog lover, and incomparable photographer of the century, who died at the end of November 2023 at the age of 95. Already during his lifetime, Elliott Erwitt was considered one of the most significant and influential photographers in the world. A long-term member of the Magnum Photo Agency, he repeatedly put together perfect compositions, filled with charm, hum ..read more
